AI systems are often used to determine public benefits—but they have been proven to cut off eligible people, deny needed services, and falsely accuse people of fraud. These injustices can’t be made better by having a human simply review and approve the AI: keeping a “human in the loop” isn’t enough.

Thanks for reading! We recognize the useful role that some AI can have in assistive tools. Our primary focus is on AI used by powerful ppl to make decisions about low-income people, which tend to harm ppl on vast scales. Our guide reflects this skepticism for orgs who mainly hear false AI hype.

We hope that it slows down irresponsible or inappropriate AI uses and minimizes the potential harms where organizations decide to move forward.

Please share and let us know what you think! /END

TTJ's guide will help you think carefully about the key issues: what AI can do, what it *shouldn't* do, the deep vetting and oversight needed, and the impact on staff and the communities you serve. /3

Many in nonprofits + government feel like AI is forced upon them by boards, elected officials, or senior leadership desperate to do more with their too-few resources. Caught up in the hype, organizations commit to AI projects that can be costly, unimpressive, and harmful to communities served. /2

#Medicaid & #Medicare turn 60 today, weeks after Trump’s Reconciliation Bill cut $1,000,000,000,000 from federal healthcare spending - defunding Medicaid and cutting health care for around 17 million people. We are confronting the obstacles of accessibility in the technological age and fighting against the algorithms that impact how historically marginalized communities survive.
But we need your help to identify and fight AI that harms access to work, housing, benefits, school, and family safety.

But when the state replaced nurses’ professional judgement with an algorithm-based system for determining home-care eligibility, people faced drastic cuts to their benefits leading to disastrous impacts to their health and dignity.

During his time at Legal Aid of Arkansas, our founder @kevindeliban.bsky.social, faced his first AI-related battle that involved Arkansas’ Medicaid program which provided in-home caregiving services to disabled people who would otherwise have to live in nursing facilities.

Today is the 35th anniversary of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), without it, people with disabilities would not have equal access in all areas of public life. In 2025, the fight for accessibility is disrupted by the invisible hand of AI decisions. This is why TechTonic Justice was born.
