It happens lol. I learned long ago that I try to do some of the more mean or rude dialogue options and I absolutely tap out so quickly.
Leliana is a solid unit imo but I normally build her as an archer. Her own special items seem to favor them in game. It also helps if she's got a bard song up.

Honestly if you get some of the items for it the doggo is unironically the best tank party member in the game.
