Retired professor of political philosophy who loves good literature, sports, art, and travel. . but then who doesn't?
This worked well for you but when advising college students I suggested they take their time choosing a major. They're very young and they should take a range of courses to see what interests them. More often than not they will discover something that they had been ignorant of up to that point.

In my work experience as a college professor what counted was whether I had a Ph.D and most important, where it was from. I realize academia is different.

I've taught at several universities none of which had a military history course. I did teach Peace Studies at one, though.

Oh dear, how awkward...the guy who coined the term "American Dream" gave the last word of his book to a young immigrant girl & said the main lesson of his day was that people who'd amassed great wealth were not "the wisest leader to follow nor the best fitted to propound a sane philosophy of life."

Who says it's evil? It's not against the rules. It's only evil if done in various nefarious ways, such as watching the catcher's signs from the stands and relaying them to the batter by, to give a real world example, banging on trash cans.

We did when I was in school but that was a while ago. I graduated from high school in 1966.

I assigned whole books whenever I could during my career teaching the history of political philosophy. To correctly represent the period) I had to assign whole books. (I drew the line on all of The Wealth of Nations however.)

My brother was an actor and I remember seeing him in a long-running production of The Gin Game.

It certainly happened during my 40-year career as a philosophy professor. Not a great many utilitarian skills there but still a lot of value.

And not just skills but perspectives and knowledge that help you be a better wiser human being apart from any utilitarian advantage.
