So ive decided I wanna get into ghibli this year, and figured i'd start with this one since the runtime was on the shorter side I at least knew about the subject matter, going in, and truthfully, it's very easy to predict the direction it'll go in, given contextual clues. That, I think is what really makes it hit; it's that inevitability you brace yourself for; you know setsuko will find out about the secrets withheld from her, and you know what'll happen to her and why that is, yet that fills you with a sense of dread that makes the happier moments only make you sadder, given the trajectory is basically set in stone at that point another takeaway I got was the theme of neglect, or rather taking an initiative at a time of crisis; something you think will benefit you only to serve as the downfall as opposed to the clearer threat; setsuko wouldn't have gotten malnourished had seita not opted to abandon his aunt; he more or less aimed to strike the same routinal procedures anyway, so it feels as though the tragedy could've been avoided, even if it's ultimately an inevitably on a more personal note, over the past yeat or so, I'd been feeling.... spoiled, i guess? moreso "not in a place to bitch given so many people have it way worse than i do", to be specific (given everything happening in america, palestine, venezuela, congo, etc). I learned to reap my own benefits and be proud of myself for doing the best I can to help those in need, but this movie really hammers in the struggle I want to express my sympathy for; film is a powerful device to help tell stories, but it can also help with internal struggles, and I hope other people can find ways to better express their own empathy toward people in need thanks to films like this. I could point out plenty of smaller details, like the disregard the film's "background npcs" have for all the casualties, but like, if any movie makes me ponder this hard on my morality, I can't give it anything other than a 10/10, can I?
