It is necessary at this point to warn the reader against a too literal interpretation of the extravagant expressions of affection to be found in Chopin's letters to his friends. The literal English translation is completely misleading and may lead to the wildest conjectures. It must be remembered that the highly coloured language used by the Slavonic peoples a hundred years ago did not correspond to realities which would in many cases scandalize and embarrass western Europeans. When Chopin writes to Titus "My dearest life! My soul! . . . I love you to madness . . . give me your lips" and so forth, we must beware of taking such effusiveness too seriously. An English translation of Chopin's letters should make the necessary allowances for these idiomatic differences between the Polish and English languages.
