Jersey. Regrettably a lawyer. Angry all the time. Trans rights/equality/safety are non-negotiable issues full stop. Stand by them or lose democracy.

So many excellent arguments. A favorite: "The implications of these realities beckon us not to picture our own thoughts in the mind of a mushroom, but to open our imagination to how other species might perceive the world in ways we cannot conceive."

It’s National Poetry Day.

The greatest poem in the English language.

Take it from me: You do NOT negotiate with abusers.

So if Trump wants to illegally take New Jersey’s funding, we have to fight back with everything we’ve got.

My idea? Eminent domain Trump’s golf course for affordable housing.

My debut in @nydailynews:

Trump took Gateway money, we must take his golf club
Take it from someone who’s spent years as a survivor advocate, working with people hurt by those in power: You do not negotiate with abusers.

If someone says they're afraid, perhaps they are processing shame into something malignant, something more cruel and petty than you can ever imagine. Maybe they want blood to distract themselves from their own reflection.
tempusfuckit.bsky.social
It may seem obvious but how people process shame is vital to understanding them. I think our social discourse has involved taking people at their word. The credulity of modern society is damaging. Maybe you can lay the blame on news outlets for modeling this behavior but don't adopt it.
tempusfuckit.bsky.social
Now the only way you can look yourself in the mirror is if you convince yourself that you are a victim. You are not just "afraid" of the other you wanted to harm with the law you were advocating, you are "afraid" of your neighbors who spoke out against it. Your fear is fake. You deserve disdain.
tempusfuckit.bsky.social
Then of course the majority of people around them simply said "we don't want this" and now they're "afraid to speak out." No, hun, you are not afraid. The feeling you are experiencing is shame. You feel ashamed because everyone told you what you wanted was cruel, immoral, wrong.

Specifically, they wanted a law that made them feel like their town was conforming to the ideological crusade that is fed to them by their echo chambers. Perhaps it convinced them that "the other" was a threat. Perhaps their fear was real in some sense, despite it being drummed up out of thin air.

"I'm terrified for my children," and that is why we must pass a law that harms trans people, poor people, immigrants, etc. Then when they receive push back from the community it goes from "I'm scared of the other" to "I'm scared to speak out." They wanted a Republican law in a liberal town.

Been kicking around some thoughts about shame. Not very well-read on psychoanalytic thinkers and possessing very little respect for the discipline, I can't say if this idea appears there or elsewhere. I sometimes see average people acting politically, claiming they are "afraid."

inbox, from Democratic Assembly nominee Katie Brennan (LD-32, Jersey City/Hoboken): Brennan Calls for New Jersey to Withhold Federal Taxes, Seize Trump’s Bedminster Golf Course After Gateway Tunnel Funding Freeze
"This is not how the government is supposed to work. We pay federal taxes but get a President who sees us as the enemy and takes away our own money as retaliation.
This has to stop.
"Donald Trump has shown again and again that he is unfit to lead this country. When he's not too busy golfing, he's doing active harm, whether it's sending masked troops into cities or shutting down vital infrastructure projects like this.
"These funds were already approved. And if people can't cross the Hudson to get to work, it will literally destroy our economy.
"We have to show Trump that this isn't okay.
"Yes, New Jersey should sue the Trump administration, but we have to do more. We should be withholding federal taxes, dollar for dollar, to backfill funding that's illegally cut.
The state should also eminent domain
Trump's golf course in Bedminster and build some affordable housing there instead. If the federal government won't stand up for New Jersey, Trenton should."

I do not love this for you. Doubt being a reply guy from all the way in NJ helps but here I am. Virtual hug.

I came here to make the "I hate lamp" "do you really hate lamp, or are you just looking at a lamp?" Joke but you beat me to the punch

Yes the workers themselves. Even union electricians who are very aware of how Trump is fucking them over. They don't care. They are in the cult. It's a function of how powerful the MAGA identity has become.
tempusfuckit.bsky.social
I don't know what to do about this but I think it's a reality we need to look closely at. We have an even bigger problem with the make up of law enforcement, but with that I feel there is no solution. You can't have leftwing cops. Antithetical. But maybe we can take back the trades.
tempusfuckit.bsky.social
Need your foundation repaired? Well that means you're definitely about to shovel tens of thousands of dollars to ole Trump-licker. You need to live in a place but can't afford to buy one? You gotta keep little feudal lordling baby all fat and happy. Can you afford to buy? Bad news about your realtor

But also Republicans tend to dominate income streams that are insulated from being beholden to an employer. Every contractor, builder, electrician, tradesman, business owner, and landlord, full blown MAGA with few exceptions. No employer to snitch to. Boycotts are comparatively weak.
tempusfuckit.bsky.social
It's like Breitbart is everywhere now. But what I'm interested in is how effective this strategy is and hard to replicate on the left. First, bc there has never been an administration that is in any way seeking to punish right wing extremists. So snitching doesn't work.
tempusfuckit.bsky.social
Republicans always go after people's employment. They have dedicated snitch networks. In NJ, a branch of Moms 4 Liberty created NJ Project, a shady organization that has recently been reporting public school teachers for failing to honor Charlie Kirk. Check out their website, absolute den of lies.
tempusfuckit.bsky.social
In my experience, I can't get this through the thick skulls of libs in my town when we're battling a hyper local Republican agenda. Rs in town are lying about the issue and when I tell my allies we need to directly address the lies they're like "uwu but I know Fred." Ok Fred wants you dead though.

Honestly, anyone who can see the absolute derangement that occurs to people once they reach these levels of wealth would know that we are doing them a favor. For the sake of their mental health and the safety of society, they cannot be allowed to accumulate this much wealth.
