但中国这样的政治体制，无法实现和谐社会。僵化的专制体制，畸形的发展模式，导致了很多问题，比如民众的基本自由被剥夺、权利被侵犯；经济发展的不平衡，贫富分化；社会也越来越压抑，缺少向心力，道德下滑，民众充满恐惧和愤懑。整个社会越来越虚伪、分裂，官方天天宣传虚假的东西，甚至故意制造仇美仇日、仇恨少数民族的情绪。

要想真正解决群体性事件的问题，需要最基本的司法公正，民主选举，需要新闻自由、集会游行示威的自由，让政治有制度性的对话，让社会有一个出气阀。而中共一味地去隐瞒、封锁、镇压，甚至大规模抓人，处以重刑，“不解决人民提出的问题，只解决提出问题的人民”，只能让矛盾加剧、让民众的怨气越积越深。

胡锦涛提出“和谐社会”的口号，也说明了这个社会是相当的不和谐。中共提出“稳定压倒一切”，首先是政权的稳定，它把政权稳定当做最大的目标。所以就看到，严密审查言论，限制民众聚集，网格化管理、高科技监控、暴力维稳。但是暴力之下的和谐，不是真正的和谐；专制之下的稳定，也不是真正的稳定。

I had a 7-hour interview with Jerry last year.
My wife & I visited Jerry at his home in Jan. 2025. We had planned to visit him again soon, but it has become a regret that will last forever.
Every time I met him, I was inspired by his kindness and passion.
His life was a legend.

Very saddened and shocked to hear of the passing of Jerry Cohen. He is the champion of promoting rule of law and human rights in China and other East Asian countries. His support is priceless for my career and my life.

在出版这本书的时候，我和孔杰荣教授合写了一篇文章《许志永VS习近平》作为序言。他们两个人代表了中国两种政治前景、法制前景。一个是许志永所呼吁、所践行的法治、民主的中国，用许志永和公民运动的话，叫 “自由、公义和爱的美好中国”。习近平所代表的是一个极权专制的、党控制一切的中国。

行动者的思考和思想者的行动，都一样珍贵。在许志永看来，通过公民联合、公民行动的方式，恐怕是最理想的转型模式。它是一种不流血的和平革命。通过公民社会的成长，迫使当局接受谈判，让出一部分权力，实现民主化。
不过在我看来，中国很可能已经丧失了和平转型的机会。

身陷囹圄的中国人权律师，对世人提出一个警醒：法律既可以是压迫的工具，也可以是抗争的武器。中国维权运动的遗产不是失败，而是抗争。他们证明：即使在一个专为压制反对力量而设的体制中，有良知的人依然能够奋起反抗。709十年，抗争仍在继续——争取一个国家的自由，就是争取所有人的自由。世界应当铭记那些为建设自由民主中国而付出巨大牺牲的勇敢律师，同时也应意识到：不能为了经济利益与政治考量而在人类自由尊严问题上保持沉默。
