The kind of guy that Spider-Man befriends in act 1 that you just KNOW is gonna become a problem in act 3.
It took me like a full 90 seconds to decipher the tone of this reply because quote-posting yourself cuts out the Durbin byte you're referring to

I mean ngl, I thought the quote about a new age and the national soul was a LITTLE broad for a local election, but there's like a whole section on gratitude! This speech wouldn't even be "downbeat" if you put it through the voice-changer from Scream and played O Fortuna in the background

Yeah, this dude is just... lying? Like this isn't a "bad take", this is either — you didn't listen to or read the speech, or you did and you're lying about what was in it (I bet the latter).

I refuse to pay the Economist or imply that they are attracting readers by creating an account, not even one for [email protected]. Can someone break down uh, what are they suggesting is the legal case? #22 is not, like, one of the weirdly-phrased, cryptic amendments. It's pretty straightforward.

If it makes you feel any better, this one sounds pretty plausible (and maybe Albert Jack was repeating something he'd heard, not just making something up). If you interrogate the original, it's like -- wait does water bind you to strangers? Is the blood Jesus blood or is the water baptism water???

I think they're referring to a semi-viral claim that the "original" phrase is "the blood of the covenant is thicker than the water of the womb", meaning basically "blood-bros matter more than bio-bros." This claim appears to have been made up by face-out gift table paperback author Albert Jack

I think you might be surprised by the vested interest Soviet propaganda has in promoting ethnic unity (under a single ideology), both domestically and with other Communist states, esp pre-Sino-Soviet split. In these DOL and Nazi examples, ethnic purity and white supremacy are the whole point.

Yeah I'm prepared to hear explanations for the tattoo (there's dumb Sailor Jerry-esque flash that looks like that in tattoo joints all over NYC and SF). But "let's talk about the pre-war Americana workwear and biker heritage of your Nazi skull tat" is NOT a feasible electoral defense.

Sounds like there are a lot of confident folks in this thread who would be surprised to discover that maintaining a 10-minute mile pace is not a given. I don't think the average person (who doesn't do cardio) could do it without a couple weeks of prep.

Yeah but... ... ... wouldn't it be better if there were a social support system that was better and safer than driving off alone? And wouldn't it be better to have that AND have walkable cities with robust public transit systems?

We're lucky that there's already a great punk song about how the governor of California is a sleazy, image-obsessed, power-hungry fascist who wants to be president

me, just going about living on day 3,144 of the fascist takeover: "tra la la, I understand the scope of the racist project undertaken by the far-right and can no longer be surprised by outrageous racist statement meant to shift the Overton window."

This is a really good point. A tailored wardrobe takes work. Brushing, hanging, conditioning, polishing, specialized cleaning... made possible by domestic partners who were obligated to take on that labor. How much did changing domestic roles contribute to the rise of the modern "comfort" wardrobe?

It's wild to me how many people appear to follow @dieworkwear.bsky.social but somehow fail to absorb any kind of lesson about pluralism or grace despite how much of his work is specifically about that
