Between 1890 and 1897, the engineers Tatin and Richet experimented a scale model of a steam-powered aeroplane, a wingspan of 6.6m and weighing 33kg. On 30 June 1897, they succeeded in flying it over a distance of 140 metres at a speed of 65km/h.

The oldest flyable aircraft & oldest engine, in the World! Blériot XI, Shuttleworth Trust. When Louis Blériot flew his Type XI across the Channel on 25th July, 1909 it literally changed the world's perception of the aeroplane. This Blériot, #14, still flies but only straight hops these days. 🛩️📍
Louis Bleriot was a genius - an overused word, but applicable in this case. He had made fortune making the world's first practicable car headlight, but set his sights on building a simple yet efficient aeroplane. Here we see, in one of the hangars at the Shuttleworth Trust Collection, Old Warden, his elegant monoplane, the Blériot XI. Wooden framed with fabric covering, it used wing-warping rather than ailerons for control. Its power comes from a 25hp Anzani engine - as well as the oldest flyable aircraft in the World, its Anzani is the oldest flight-worthy aero engine in the World. The development of wide-bodied airliners such as the Boeing 747 in the 1960s stimulated the design of a new generation of large aeroplane engines called turbofans. Engines like this power most of the aircraft now flying, because they are quieter and more fuel efficient than other types. Rolls-Royce had been trying to break into the US airliner market for years and contracted with Lockheed to develop the engines for its own wide-body rival, the L-1011 TriStar. The new RB 211 was larger, more powerful, but more demanding than anything previously built by Rolls-Royce, and the costs of the programme bankrupted the company in 1971. This particular engine was the sixth built. It made 28 flights on the prototype TriStar during 1971. The general design proved to be a great technical success and revived Rolls-Royce's fortunes. The unique 'three shaft' architecture has been extended for all the subsequent large Trent-series engines used today and which have won Rolls-Royce more than a third of global airline engine sales. cover page for patent for an airplane. the airplane has forward and rearward sets of wings that extend at all angles (including vertically) around a completely open fuselage. the two sets of wings are loosely connected to each other by thin strips of wood. the airplane also has a propeller and set of four wheels. image shows a head-on view of the airplane, with the wings extending 360 degrees around a seat for the pilot. paragraphs describe how the wings are all connected to each other by wires and are free to rotate around the engine and pilot sitting in the pilot’s seat.

In 1903, "Villotran's Aeroplane" was tested on rail.
It was a very imposing machine for its time, with a metal structure & a 63-hp engine driving 2 propellers in push-pull configuration.
The results of the tests are not known, but in September, the machine was damaged in a crash.

That was the first time a 6-wheel Grand Prix car raced. It is an #IsottaFraschini competing in the 1921 #ItalianGP held near Brescia.

Brothers Ernesto and #AlfieriMaserati, who developed the Hispano Suiza aeroplane engine powering the car, were at the wheel.

I might've just written (with Derek Buckmaster) a CAC Wirraway Database for Aeroplane Monthly. Inc getting the airframe and engine into production in Aus. He made the point that building the supply infrastructure (exactly what you've mentioned) on a remote island continent was a HUGE achievement.

The Armstrong Whitworth A.W.XVI (or A.W.16) was a British single-engine biplane fighter developed for operation from the Royal Navy’s aircraft carriers. It first flew in 1930, but only 18 were built, including two prototypes. Engine problems during development delayed its evaluation, and the Hawker Nimrod was selected instead for the Royal Navy. Sixteen aircraft were ordered by the Guangxi (Kwangsi) Air Force and delivered in 1931 via Hong Kong.

The model aeroplane is coloured silver and red and has a wing span of 22 inches. THE TIGER MOTH This is the most wonderful Model Aeroplane Construction Set ever produced and is very simple to make up from the profusely illustrated Book of Instructions.
