Watched Lone Star (1996). A movie so deeply committed to understanding how people of all stripes and colors are shaped by the past, such that while by the beginning you're eager to see false myths upended, by the end you'll even find yourself on the same precipice as the men who started those myths

They already made that and it's called Gunstar Super Heroes

It's absurd how Ys Seven is basically THE archetypical Modern Melee Action Game™ despite being released only a month or two before the major trendsetters. Omniparries, invincible dodge rolls, tacked-on crafting systems, stagger bars that let you wail on bosses for free once filled: it's all there

Watched ONCE UPON A TIME IN CHINA (1991). Anything that can be theoretically done using ladders in a 1-on-1 fistfight has already been done in the last 20 minutes of this. Has a messy amount of subplots, but the fight choreography hits it stride after the first third, and then it keeps. ESCALATING.

Cities need more public abstract art exhibits so that they can be used for tokusatsu shoot locations

Clearly you can do more with (third-person) dialogue presentation than shot/reverse shot, but you have to let go a little of being a mature game for mature gamers to do so. Something like low-budget filmmaking can provide ample inspiration for how to get the most out of little

Pathologic 2 does so more succesfully through its overt stageplay influences, Wasteland 3's major NPC dialogues feel like 3D animated C&C FMV cutscenes in the best way possible, South Park: The Stick of Truth is based on a cartoon and framed like another episode of it

Said stylishness is commonly associated by target audiences with the enemy (JRPGs), which is rather unfortunate given the stylistic flourishes in older RPG classics, which instead stemmed from pulp fiction influences
December 24, 2025 at 10:53 PM
Although when even big-budget third-person RPGs like TW3, Dragon Age, and Mass Effect seem hopelessly addicted to shot/reverse shot presentation, I'm chalking it up to a lack of imagination, and the pervasive cultural WRPG tradition of stoicism making them allergic to stylishness in presentation

A lot of non-big budget JRPGs (and Final Fantasy games up to the PS1) like to use chibi/SD character models, which allow you to do some expressive character animations for many NPCs at relatively little cost or effort, such as by primitively having models spin around or jump

VtMB having first-person dialogue meant it couldn't do fancy camera tricks, but it having a relatively fewer dialogueable NPCs meant it was feasible to consistently make most dialogue visually interesting through expressive character acting, as opposed to the larger cast of most Bethesda RPGs
December 24, 2025 at 10:53 PM
That said, these are usually necessary compromises due to the scope of having tons of dialogueable (voice-acted) NPCs that are expected to be rendered up close in high-fidelity. They don't have the luxury of being able to leave character acting up to imagination like top-down isometric RPGs can

Now, like the door opening sound effect in DOOM, you too will not be able to unsee this everywhere. Like, please get a little experimental with the camera angles, at least! Stop making me stare at the back of somebody's neck like that guy from E3 2010!!!! Does this not drive anybody insane?!?!?!
December 24, 2025 at 10:53 PM
3rd-person RPGs really have to find more inventive ways of presenting dialogue than OTS shot/reverse shots. I understand that not all dialogue scenes can have expressive directing because budget, but come on, JRPGs with static character portraits for different emotions are more fun to look at
