The modern age is unquestionably a better time to live, but I definitely think humans lost something when the world ceased to be an unknown frontier. My two favorite examples are this drawing of a Chinese merchant bringing home a giraffe and this sketch of Commodore Perry. 1/2

I just finished E199 of @hotgpod.bsky.social . While I am very excited to reach 1618, I absolutely live for the niche tangents this podcast goes on. They truly make me appreciate what a massive, complex and multicultural entity the HRE truly was, and not just a proto-Germany.
