Lol Bruce, I believe that the great Dr. Al Wiedeman is giving one of his inspirational botanical lectures here, enthralling my young mind.

20 years ago this summer I took a life-changing botany class as an undergrad at Evergreen that got my career trajectory rolling.

Happy to share I am going to teach a field botany class to the next generation of Greeners this summer!

I'm happy to share that @wyowildbotany.bsky.social and I have published a report on the status of federally listed and recently delisted plants in WA.

We report on population trends and synthesize research on some of Washington's rarest plants.

Holy shit. Republican Harriet Hagemen got torn apart at a town hall in Wyoming last night. In a state that voted for Trump by 46 points.

She tried defending DOGE and it went as well as you’d imagine.

“Deport Elon, Deport Elon!”

Watch to the end…

Portland / Columbia Gorge folks, would you like to hone your plant identification skills this season? We still have a few spots left and it's the last day to get the early bird discount for our course!

State AGs are looking for federal workers who have just been illegally fired to stand as litigants in a new lawsuit trying to freeze further action by DOGE.

DM me if that’s you and you’re interested and you’re live in one of the following states: NM, AZ, CA, CT, MD, MI, MN, NV, OR, WA, RI, or VT.

This admin is trying to destroy the gov't but it's not over yet. These cuts and firings are disastrous for everyone, but will hit red states the hardest. Tr ump's base is realizing they are being harmed by this. I think we're going to see Americans united against this recklessness. Time 4 action.

Thinking about my US Forest Service partners and research collaborators. You are all so fantastic.

One thing Democratic leadership could do right now is to name an alternate HHS secretary--someone to provide ongoing public updates and health information. And do it for other departments too. Start showing voters what a Democratic government would look like--press conferences, speeches, all of it.

Scenes from the California Lichen Society’s 31st annual meeting and field trip in San Luis Obispo County in Late January. Wonderful group of folks—as always some new faces and some familiar—and amazing lichens. I’m grateful for the community that keeps this little org going year after year.

One of my favorite plants of 2024 was Klickitat lomatium (Lomatium klickitatensis), an endemic to the Klickitat watershed near the Columbia Gorge. It has a small range but is abundant within it, covering the slopes above the river. The anise swallowtails were loving it.

Oh good to know, thanks!

Does anyone know of field stations in the PNW or California that have lab classrooms with 10-20 dissecting microscopes available for use?

Have you been to the Pacific Northwest? It's amazing! We even have a fjord, you'd feel right at home.

In 2023, I traveled to every corner of WA & visited some of the rarest plants in the state--a wild adventure. Feeling fortunate to work with many smart people doing great conservation work. 2024 is sure to be a wild ride, but I'm glad to have good company for the journey.

Wondering about the future of pyrodiversity research?

Long ago, in the ancient year of 2020, @zacksteel.bsky.social & I organized a symposium on pyrodiversity w/ a rad group of fire ecologists. Paper that resulted is finally out!

Interested in how fire affects biodiversity? 🔥🐦🦇🐝🌿

We have a new paper synthesizing work and building a framework for future research and application focused on the hypothesis that "Pyrodiversity begets biodiversity"
