I should say that my edition had a rather intense illustration of Achilles killing Hector that has stuck with me until now. Maybe the current illustrations aren't so graphic.

It's not modern by any means, but I had a copy of The Children's Homer (Iliad + Odyssey) by Padraig Colum when I was growing up in the 90s. Illustrations for that edition I think by Barry Moser. Looks like the recommended reading age is 10-14, though I'm not sure how accessible if language is now.
