The People’s Joker is one of the most badass punk rock movies to come out of this decade, and needs to be in the canon.

In conclusion, I believe #spikelee is constantly overlooked in the discussion of great filmmakers, despite having an incredibly acclaimed and successful career. Too many times people point to the Oldboy remake as a way to dismiss the rest of his vast catalogue. Go watch a #spikeleejoint

There are a dozen other works I could point to. When the Leeves Broke, an incredible documentary about the wake of Hurricane Katrina. Chiraq, Blackkklansman, Da 5 Bloods, all fantastic.

David Byrnes’ American Utopia is incredibly important to me, and shows #spikelee’s dynamic range as an artist.

After Bamboozled is The 25th Hour. #spikelee’s third masterpiece. An incredibly bleak film that showcases the post 9/11 anger in this country better than any other film has. The fight between love and hate has echo’d through every single one of spikes work, and this is one of the strongest.

Not to skip over Clockers, Get on the Bus, He Got Game, or Summer of Sam, which are all fantastic, but I want to shoutout #spikelee’s Bamboozled. To this day it is one of the most subversive films ever made. Designed to be wrestled with, Bamboozled stands out in Spikes work and pushes the medium.

Following up X, #spikelee makes one of his most underrated films, Crooklyn.

A family in Brooklyn trying to make it day by day, Crooklyn is Spikes most intimate film, and shows a life of struggle through the lens of a child. My introduction to Delroy Lindo, and one of his great performances.

After the great Jungle Fever and Mo’ Better Blues, #spikelee made Malcolm X, a sprawling 3 hr epic that goes by in the blink of an eye.

Our greatest living actor plays one of the great American heroes in his best performance ever. This is Spikes second masterpiece, he and Denzel are unmatched.

In 1989 #spikelee made Do The Right Thing, the greatest American film of all time.

Nostalgic, fun, hilarious, sexy, powerful, heart wrenching. No other film has come close to capturing the energy of this movie, it is abundantly clear that it could only be made by a master. Watch it right now.

In 1986, #spikelee released his first feature film, She’s Gotta Have it.

Inspired by Kurasawa’s Rashamon and paying homage to The Wizard of Oz, Spike comes out of the gate with a style that shares his modern view of the world through a very classic lens of filmmaking. An incredibly strong debut.

In honor of black history month, and the fact that he’s got a new movie on the way, I want to shoutout the most underrated American filmmaker of his generation, the great #spikelee
