Debating even the most heinous ideas seems instinctively appealing.

"You need to engage in the battle of ideas to convince those you disagree with or their followers that they're wrong", etc.

But, there may not be persuadable! Not legitimising or giving them exposure might be best.

If we cannot trust our own eyes and ears because of the proliferation of AI generated fakes, it is all the more important that we have trusted sources who can verify the information for us.

There's an opening for media doing more reporting/verification and less opining (unlike recent trends?).

I have no opinion on that. Taking the illegality as a working hypothesis, I think it'd be a serious infraction. If the working hypothesis is wrong, then obviously nothing follows from it.

Yeah, that all hinges on if it is illegal to begin with. I don't have an opinion on that. If it's not, obviously it's a very different discussion.

Given that armed guards need to board a vessel in international waters and that in the past such incidents have been deadly, I don't think it's a borderline infraction (say, an overzealous coastguard vessel chasing away some fishermen). It's not end-of-the-world serious, but it's quite substantial.

If the arrests are illegal, they are serious violations. They don't have to be sent to Guantanamo to have been abducted. In that scenario, as far as the violations go, it would not matter one iota if their intentions were pure and effective or what they seem to be.

If the arrests are illegal (no opinion on that), then they are state-sanctioned abductions. But, it is all theatre. If it raises awareness & intensifies public pressure to then do sth effective. Yet, it seems to be used to simply raise the profile of individuals/groups.

Θα ρισκάρω μια προβλεψη: πριν το τέλος της θητείας η κυβέρνηση θα (επαν)ίδρυσει κάτι σαν τον Οργανισμο Εργατικής Κατοικίας. Πλην του να βολέψει μερικές εκατοντάδες άεργους στο Δημόσιο, ελάχιστο αντίκτυπο θα έχει η κίνηση αυτή στο στεγαστικό πρόβλημα

Έψαξα αν υπάρχει ο αρθρογράφος κι έπεσα σε τούτο δω x-demography.gr/CensusesData... Στο μπάτζετ του ΕΛΙΔΕΚ δεν προνόησαν να πληρώσουν SSL certificate για πάνω από ένα χρόνο;

Πάει κανείς να δει το έργο, βλέπει προειδοποίηση για κίνδυνο. Αλλά έχει το πρότζεκτ δικό του σάιτ (κοινή πρακτική, ξέρω).

We just spent 6 months to add 1 figure to this paper. Some people said, "Couples aren't prioritizing men's careers. Men just have better earnings opportunities when moving."

Earnings effects of moves for couples on the left, singles on the right. Negligible gap between single men and women.

Event study coefficients that show that men's earnings rise more than women's among couples following a cross-commuting zone move (left panels). The pattern is muted or reverses among single men and single women (right panels).

Φαντάζομαι όταν έχεις λεφτά, υγεία και χρόνο να τα χαρείς, βελτιώνεται. Υποθέτω για πολλούς αυτή η περίοδος συμπίπτει με τα 50-60 που φεύγουν τα παιδιά απ'το σπίτι/βρίσκουν την πρώτη τους δουλειά (αν πληρώνεις για έξοδα πανεπιστημίου).

Κάντε παιδιά στα 25 να χαρείτε τα λεφτά σας στα 50.

Αν το συνεχίσουν, να ψάξουμε ποιος έχει επενδύσει σε σπίτια χτισμένα πριν το 2007. Ή ίσως είναι ένας τρόπος να διασώσουν τους πιστολέρο* που αγόρασαν σπίτι πριν την κρίση.

*Επωφελούνται κι άλλοι, αλλά κάτι μου λέει ότι οι άλλοι θα'ταν η γλάστρα σ'ένα τέτοιο σενάριο.

A life update: this wound up paying off. I'm still applying to several jobs that are hopefully careers, but I've got my survival needs covered by a job at the airport that I'm apparently pretty good at.

And instead of being in an office alone, which was driving me mad, I see 20k people a day.

Δεν αρνήθηκε, αλλά το σκέφτηκε να αρνηθεί. Μας είχε κάπου ενδιάμεσα σε Ιταλούς και Τούρκους. Δίκιο είχε μάλλον, αλλά με απόσταση 50 χρόνων αυτές οι κατηγοριοποιήσεις μπορεί να φαίνονται περίεργες αν θεωρούνται αμετάλλακτες στο χρόνο (ο Σμιτ δε φαίνεται να τις θεωρούσε τέτοιες).

Ε, και για τους Τούρκους απ'την Ανατολία λόγω ασθενούς οικονομίας έλεγε ότι δεν ήθελε ελευθερία μετακίνησης (==ένταξη). Δε λέω ότι είχε άδικο, αλλά οι λόγοι που έδινε για τις αρνήσεις του δεν ήτανε ότι δεν γίνεται με τίποτα να ενταχθούν, αλλά ότι οι συνθήκες δεν ήτανε πρόσφορες.

Το πιο σημαντικό κτγμ απ'όσα έλεγε ο Σμιτ είναι ότι ασκούσε κριτική στους Γερμανούς και θεωρούσε τη γερμανική νοοτροπία εν μέρει υπεύθυνη για τη δυσκολία ενσωμάτωσης. Δεν είχε άδικο, αλλά ποιος θέλει ν'ακούει οικεία κακά;
