Nearly fifty years later, it would be discovered that Brynden Rivers was still alive, albeit changed beyond comprehension. In a distant cave under a weirwood tree beyond the Wall, Brynden sits upon a throne of white roots, his body decrepit but still kept alive through the intertwined veins of the ancient tree. Though half dead, Lord Bloodraven still watches through the power of the trees, orchestrating events and manipulating people for some still unknown purposes.

The Lord Commander of the Night’s Watch
Lord Rivers remained the Hand of the King into the reign of Maekar I. Following the death of the warrior king, Bloodraven called for a great council to determine disputed matter of succession. Aenys Blackfyre, a younger son of the late Daemon I, asked safe passage to peacefully participate, to which Bloodraven agreed. However, once Aenys arrived in King’s Landing, he was arrested and beheaded. The Great Council chose Maekar’s youngest son to succeed as King Aegon V Targaryen, and his first act was to arrest Lord Bloodraven for the murder of Aenys. Lord Rivers argued that he sacrificed his honor for the good of the realm, but the new king refused to set him free. Instead of death, King Aegon offered him to take the black, to which he accepted. Brynden Rivers would set sail for The Wall in 233AC, and would be elected as Lord Commander in 239AC. However, in 252AC, Lord Commander Rivers would set out on a ranging mission beyond The Wall and never return.

The White Wrym and Hand of the King
“During the First Blackfyre Rebellion in 195 AC, Brynden remained loyal to his trueborn half-brother, King Daeron II Targaryen, and ended the war at the Battle of the Redgrass Field by raining arrows down onto the pretender Daemon I Blackfyre, another half-brother. Aegor ‘Bittersteel’ Rivers, another bastard son of King Aegon IV, took up Daemon’s sword and led a mad charge against the royalists. The resulting duel between the rival half-brothers left Brynden blind in one eye and Aegor retreating with the remaining rebels… In 209 AC, Brynden was made Hand of the King under King Aerys I Targaryen, and was brutal in crushing treasonous Blackfyre speech. It was said that Bloodraven had ‘a thousand eyes, and one,’ the one red eye on his face and the thousand eyes of his spies.”

On the right side of his face was a winestain birthmark that looked somewhat in the shape of a raven, earning him the name ‘Bloodraven’.”
