My take is that and ending doesn’t have to be good for me to appreciate the whole, but an ending can absolutely be so bad it ruins the rest of it.

Really the only games I buy immediately the last few years are like my "core" franchises with RE, Metroid, MonHun, and Doom. It helps that I discovered I can also just rent games I want to play from the library for free if I want to play it within a month or two of release.
