Any Jaws is too much Jaws due to the unfortunate bad press that it gave sharks in general. ISTR that Benchley regretted this very much in later life....

First thing to do - is to understand the economic benefit to the country. Yes, there's a cost but what is the cost of having an under-motivated and a culture that does encourage lifelong learning...apart from a savvy population that listens to experts and doesn't treat lies as normal behaviour.

leisure (and there is nothing wrong with that) but some will use it to learn in whatever way suits them.

Instead of denigrating Universities, defunding institutes, closing libraries and generally being anti-learning and education - we need political parties who support learning for all.

We need to rebuild our adult education services and really promote the idea of lifelong learning.

One of the reasons that I am advocate for the four day week is that it would allow more people space to carry on learning or learn a completely new skill. Yes, many will take it as an extra day of

also done amazingly. Oh and at my current employer; at the grand age of 57 - I could do an apprenticeship.

We should be reinvigorating the idea of apprenticeships - not denigrating degrees!! People should be given more options as to what path they want their learning to take.

at 18 and you did your banking exams as you worked.

Recent experience at employers - I've had apprentices - they decided wisely that they didn't want to pick-up debt and wanted to be paid whilst learning. A couple of them then went on to do degrees and have done amazingly; some didn't bother and

promoted a lot more and funded properly. We need employers to stop gate-keeping roles and be more open to people who have been through apprenticeships.

When I was younger - many of the professions, you entered at 18 - I PQed in accountancy before going onto Poly. Banking was often entered into

into education and work - there has been a bit of fetishization of the degree. Schools talk proudly about the numbers of their students who go onto university - but rarely talk about the students who go onto to do an apprenticeship.

We need more and better apprenticeships - they should be

Badenoch's two degree thing...doing a first degree and then a law degree is not an unusual route into the law. I know plenty of lawyers who have done that. The fact that she didn't use her engineering degree is not an example that degrees are useless.

And we do need to encourage other routes

I don't know if there is an afterlife but in balance but trying to be a better person is a goal in itself.

Trump is the sort of person who have bought indulgences and paid people to pray for him. I can just see him as a fat, disgusting, evil Prince of the Church in medieval times.
thatmartin.bsky.social
A man who thinks there is no reason to be good unless there is an afterlife should never be allowed the reins of powers.

We can debate whether a person is good or not - but if you do not feel that being a good person is an aim in itself - you must be some kind of sociopath.
