'People' is already a collective noun, so why should it be made even more collective? Unless you are talking about different groups of oppressed people? Genuine question, as my editorial brain is also confused by that analysis.

There's a vast amount of cultural understanding around the AIDS epidemic that has not been passed down because there's almost an entire generation of gay men who were also lost. Unless you were there at that time, it's almost unfathomable.
