#Atheists have always been a minority in written #history, not least because "atheist" was often just a convenient label for those who did not believe what everyone else believed. Still, #atheism existed in #India and #Greece.

One of the first philosophies that rejected all supernaturalism was the Carvaka/Lokayata school in India, which dates to the first millennium BCE. It held that the visible world alone exists, that the only heaven is to be found in the wearing of beautiful clothing, in the company of young women, and in the enjoyment of delicious food, and that the only hell to be avoided is the difficulties of the present. Religious sacrifices were seen as merely a source of income for priests, and otherwise a waste of time and money. In contrast, people were advised to donate instead to those in need.

Are #atheists immoral? Some studies say so! However, these studies lump together atheists with the less serious believers. But less religiousness is not more #atheism. Studies that concern themselves explicitly with atheists find out they are not less #moral.
