Treated myself to not a bad Boxing Day haul, especially with keeping things under $20/record.

It's The AM's midwinter special—partly inspired by the winter solstice, partly by Christmas. A quiet one even by AM standards, but hopefully it introduces a few new seasonal favourites (including rarities from Blur, Animal Collective, Bjork, & more).

The first AM of December hopefully sounds less wintry than the world outside. A throwback to Talk Talk’s final album, new music from Chad VanGaalen, The Notwist, and Teen Daze and a mix of genres from the ambient and experimental to the groovy and garage-y.

Bit of a glitch with this week's episode, so the recording may or may not be available tomorrow. But there's always the Apple Music and Spotify playlists, if you want the music without the rambling:

Couple good finds at the antique shop today. I’ve been watching out for the MMC3 release for a surprisingly long while now.

Jonathan Richman is joy and sincerity and wisdom and silliness, an absolute blessing to see him perform. It’s a wonder how he makes every song sound so alive, and forces the audience to be so present.

Can't resist tossing out a few #BandcampFriday suggestions for fans of pastoral ditties, ambient electronics, dreamy psychedelia, and gentle kosmische. A thread of great recent releases from the past month or so, in alphabetical order:
October 3, 2025 at 2:34 PM
Winter - Adult Romantix
daydreamingwinter.bandcamp.com/album/adult-...
More muscular than her usual gossamer-gaze, but no less considered & intricate.

yanaco - Alone Together
yanaco.bandcamp.com/album/alone-...
Vaguely new age, ambient beats, a hushed tribute to moments of shared solitude.
September 3, 2025 at 4:05 AM
Steve Gunn - Music for Writers
stevegunn.bandcamp.com/album/music-...
Serving inspiration one ambient guitar line at a time.

The New Eves - The New Eve is Rising
theneweves.bandcamp.com/album/the-ne...
Dark folk & post punk, by far the rowdiest release in this list but impossible to turn away from.
September 3, 2025 at 4:05 AM
Sewell and the Gong - Patron Saint of Elsewhere
sewellandthegong.bandcamp.com/album/patron...
I'm such a sucker for pastoral British electronics. Pure contentment.

Shabason, Krgovich, Tenniscoats - Wao
josephshabason.bandcamp.com/album/wao
Off-kilter pop innovators gonna off-kilter pop innovate.
September 3, 2025 at 4:05 AM
Postnamers - City Songs
postnamers.bandcamp.com/album/city-s...
Post-goth cut & paste compositions. Hard to pin down, harder to ignore.

Rodrigo Passannanti - Everything Dies
cyclicaldreams.bandcamp.com/album/everyt...
Existentialism by way of software synth. To sleep, perchance to tangerine dream.
September 3, 2025 at 4:05 AM
Organic Pulse Ensemble - Oppression is Nine Tenths of the Law
rrgems-records.bandcamp.com/album/oppres...
Worth it for the title alone. Fortunately the one-man spiritual jazz band is also soul-affirming.

Pneumatic Tubes - Runner's High
open.spotify.com/album/7dn8qT...
Can't recommend highly enough.
September 3, 2025 at 4:05 AM
Modern Nature - The Heat Warps
modernnature.bandcamp.com/album/the-he...
After a few albums seeing how diffuse their sound could get (to brilliant effect), this probably counts as forceful?

No Joy - Bugland
nojoy.bandcamp.com/album/bugland
Omnivorous shoegaze, with no sound left unturned.
September 3, 2025 at 4:05 AM
Mansur Brown - Rihla
mansurbrown.bandcamp.com/album/rihla
The AR Kane school of dream pop—at turns silky, noisy, hushed & grand. Rainy city streets & existential angst.

Mattias Unneback - Harry Garth Jones Presents Music for Love
ixtahuele.bandcamp.com/album/harry-...
Effortless pop exotica.
September 3, 2025 at 4:05 AM
Korb - Korb IV
dreamlordrecordings.bandcamp.com/album/korb-iv
Soundtracky psych that's willing to get wonky, but never loses sight of the groove.

Mac DeMarco - Guitar
macdemarco.bandcamp.com/album/guitar
Understated, not so much as an unneeded flourish, just concise, well-observed indie folk tunes.
September 3, 2025 at 4:05 AM
Edena Gardens - Dispossessed
open.spotify.com/album/5CQTwo...
More sprawling psych jams from the good folks at El Paraiso Records.

Ivan the Tolerable & Hawksmoor - Atoms in the Void
libraryoftheoccult.bandcamp.com/album/atoms-...
Haunted jazz, ASMR, cosmic jazz—trippy in all the right ways.
September 3, 2025 at 4:05 AM
C.R. Gillespie - Island of Women
crgillespie.bandcamp.com/album/island...
Warm & balmy ambient sounds, gently percussive & consistently inventive.

David Boulter - Whitby
claypipemusic.bandcamp.com/album/whitby
An instrumental detour from the Tindersticks organist, another lovely Clay Pipe ramble.
September 3, 2025 at 4:05 AM
Ami Taf Ra - The Prophet and the Madman
amitafra.bandcamp.com/album/the-pr...
Maximalist jazz-prog, high-concept, played without a whiff of restraint but who needs it.

Avi C. Engel - Mote
fennycompton.bandcamp.com/album/fc8-mote
Drone-folk, rich and loamy, with the haunting tone of gudok.
September 3, 2025 at 4:05 AM
Today's episode is live: Interviews with filmmakers Cordell Barker and Elyse Bouvier, plus the usual mix of hazy sounds to start your week on the right footing—a bit easier than usual with the long weekend, but still a worthy goal.
