The latter is especially important. LLMs very easily get stuck in a kind of local minima in the auto-complete space and don't have any inherent way to get out. You have to be the force that perturbs it enough to get out of the fixation. Often the best approach is to start a new chat and nudge it.

I wonder how much this plays into different people's perceptions of how smart/useful LLMs are?
With an LLM you have to be the meta-cognition component of the system. You have to nudge it in good directions, model clear thinking, and know when to abandon certain lines of query.
