I’m 99% sure someone threw something in my open car window because something skimmed my head and the person in the car next to me slowed down when I did because of it. I am so fucking tired of this place and these just awful people. Like it was just pure, uncalled for cruelty

The 2000s English anime boom could have leveraged the feral interest in anime to move fans to advocate for improved animation industry standards, but every avenue was obsessed with hype and overconsumption. I don't think WE'VE even recovered from Tokyopop's exploitation rates twenty years later.

Question: Given Trigun's huge success in America, do you now make anime with America in mind? Nishimura: When I make an anime, I make it so I can enjoy it. If the people in America can enjoy it because of the same reason I do, I am very happy. Maruyama: This is a very difficult question because by eliminating Japanese cultural references it may make it more acceptable in the U.S. and worldwide, but there are some cases in which having Japanese cultural references that a foreigner would find strange can actually make that anime more acceptable. So, as a ground rule, we try not to consider the fact that it's going to be exported or make any script or directing changes.
Question: But are you ever bothered that Trigun gets edited for American TV? Maruyama: I am sometimes a little upset that they change things, but I am at the same time happy that it's getting released in the U.S. Even when making anime in Japan, the way we work on it is suddenly different depending on the format. I think it's unavoidable that there are going to be minor changes to anime when it's exported to other countries that have different censoring rules. But there are some changes that take it too far.
Question: What does the future of the Japanese animation industry hold? [Maruyama continuing] increased dramatically. To be quite frank, we are producing more anime than we should be right now. We are over capacity. This has led to a decline in the quality of anime. Nishimura: I feel the same way as Maruyama-san. The amount of anime that I have to work on has reached a point where I can't really be responsible for the quality for all the anime that I'm working on. If we could reduce the quantity of anime, then I would be happy.
Question: Any future plans you can divulge? Maruyama: For myself, I have five projects in the pipeline, but I hope to give information piece meal. [sic] Last year I inadvertently admitted I was working in The Animatrix, and the Wachowski brothers were very angry with me. Nishimura: I have two original ideas I would like to animate. One would involve a scientist and be a The Right Stuff-type story. I also have one that would be just like a high school-type story.
Question: Since Hayao Miyazaki has won an Academy Award for Spirited Away, do you feel that raises the bar for the Japanese animation industry? Maruyama: I hope so. (Laughs) You know, Miyazaki-san didn't suddenly become much better at making anime. The reason he won the Academy Award is because he kept doing the same thing he always did, but now is being recognized. So we'll continue doing things the same way we have always been doing it. The one thing to note is that for Spirited Away Miyazaki-san had a far larger budget than he did for any of his previous work.
