I'm years into my own trauma & addiction recovery, & recovery is the core of my professional identity-- and even I have to return to basics, every single day, to support my safety & stability. There's NOTHING negative about "back to basics." Thank GOD the basics are there for us.

Abuse survivors are heavily triggered by dishonest people. When you’ve sacrificed your time and security in order to figure out the truth, people who lack truth will feel like they’re pulling you back to your darkest days.

Survivors of trauma, especially sexual trauma, often encounter negative social reactions. Rape myths and victim blaming-- both subtle & overt-- deepen & complicate trauma responses survivors experience from the trauma itself.

It's how trauma becomes complex trauma.

Imagining the family & mentors we wish we'd had is a mental focus tool that got many of us through periods of abuse, neglect, & bullying-- & a tool we can intentionally leverage now in our trauma recovery.

It's not "playing make believe." It's marshaling our internal resources.

Many of us working our trauma recovery are not trying to get back to some pre-trauma state. We may not even remember a "before" time.

We're building, not rebuilding, who we are, & we need to remember: it takes patience, courage, & compassion to become someone we've never been.

Belittling & neglecting ourselves comes easy when it was how we were raised-- & how those responsible for our care "taught" us to relate to ourselves.

Self-respect & self-care are gonna feel radical & awkward-- because they're unfamiliar, not because we don't "deserve" them.

Whatever it is-- breathe into it. Not w/ a gasp or a gulp; w/ a smooth, even draw, in, out. Easy does it, no pressure, no rush.

Breathing won't solve all our problems-- but it's inextricably entwined w/ the specific problem of somatic dysregulaton. Frame breathwork as one tool.

Have y’all heard of Howard Gardner and his theory of multiple intelligences? He posits that people have different levels of intelligence. My strengths are #1 musicality and #2 linguistic. My weakness is mathematical. What are yours?

I wrote this song after watching the movie “The Other Boleyn Girl”. I made this lyric video a few years ago. I’m thinking about tweaking the song a little bit. Such a great movie and a truly fascinating time in history.
