The Birds of America is a collection of illustrations by naturalist John James Audubon published from 1827 to 1838. The set consists of 435 prints made from engraved plates depicting life-sized birds in a natural setting.

The female, below right, is in full profile, sticking out its tongue which seems to show spines near the tip. The male, left, and other female, above, are investigating a scarab-type beetle. Generally similar to the extant pileated woodpecker, the birds are mostly black with a white stripe extending from their cheek to the mantle, with large white patched on the wings, and pale eyes.
