The ’78 #CanadianGP, run #OnThisDay 47 years ago, is always remembered for Gilles Villeneuve’s maiden #F1 GP win, but Jean-Pierre Jarier led from pole in Ronnie Peterson’s tragically available Lotus 79 & would have won had he not been stopped after 49 laps by an oil leak.

Jackie Stewart, Ken Tyrrell & François Cevert look happy in this pic, don’t they? Well, they should: the Tyrrell drivers had just finished 1st & 2nd in the ’72 #USGP, which took place at Watkins Glen #OnThisDay 53 years ago. Oh & Uncle Ken had trousered a then-record US$97,500!

#OnThisDay in ’61 Innes Ireland scored his one & only #F1 GP win, at Watkins Glen. It was also Team Lotus’s first F1 GP win - but they’d score 73 more. #AnorakFact: the winning car, which had also been raced by both Jim Clark & Stirling Moss, was sold in 2003 for £155,500.

Remembering Yves Giraud-Cabantous, born #OnThisDay in 1904, who started 13 GPs from ’50 to ’53, finishing 4th in the first ever championship #F1 GP, Silverstone ’50, in this Talbot-Lago T26C-DA. #AnorakFact: he retired in ’57 to concentrate on the haulage business he’d founded.

Ha! Actually I know almost nothing about Star Wars!

I don’t think we have… but I can’t remember for sure! 😬

So #HappyBirthday Vincenzo Sospiri, 59. Fab in karts & a winner in #F3000 (’95 champ), he entered one #F1 GP, Melbourne ’97, in one of the worst F1 cars of all time, the Lola T97/30 (pic). A hefty 1.3sec faster in quali than team-mate Ricardo Rosset, he was 11.6sec off pole.(2/2)

#AnorakFact: in a Q&A with #F1Racing readers in 2012, asked about his heroes, Michael Schumacher replied: “To start with, it was Vincenzo Sospiri. Then it was Ayrton Senna. Those 2 guys inspired me big time while I was karting.” Pic: Sospiri, 59 today, now runs a GT team.(1/2)

Villeneuve won at a wet Watkins Glen #OnThisDay in ’79. On the Friday, when the rain had been torrential, he’d been more than 9sec faster than anyone else. “Look at him,” said a watching Laffite as Gilles splashed past. “He’s different from the rest of us, on a separate level.”

#OnThisDay in ’73, at Watkins Glen, these 3 drivers finished 1st (Ronnie Peterson, Lotus 72E), 2nd (James Hunt, March 731) & 3rd (Carlos Reutemann, Brabham BT42). But the mood was very sombre, for Tyrrell’s François Cevert had been killed during qualifying the day before.

Remembering Bernard Collomb, born #OnThisDay in ’30, who started 4 #F1 GPs & DNQ’d for 2 more, including Monaco ’63, where he campaigned this self-prepared Lotus 24. #AnorakFact: 16th in quali, ahead of Jack Brabham (17th), he DNQ’d because Brabham was an automatic qualifier.

Darth Vader first appeared in ’77, right? Yes, but at Watkins Glen in ’62 Dan Gurney tried a race helmet that looked more than somewhat like that of the the future #StarWars icon. Here he is chatting with Porsche team-mate Jo Bonnier. Jim Clark won the race #OnThisDay in ’62.

Peter Walker, ’51 Le Mans winner, was born #OnThisDay in 1912. Jag boss Lofty England said he was “sometimes quicker than Moss”. Moss said he was “one of life’s great guys”. #AnorakFact: after he stopped racing, he farmed chinchillas. Pic: BRM, non-championship #PenyaRhinGP, ’50.

#OnThisDay in ’65 the Rolls-Royce Silver Shadow was launched at the Paris Salon de l’Automobile (aka motor show) - so I’m posting this pic simply because it floats my boat. (2/2)

#OnThisDay in 2013 Seb Vettel won the last #KoreanGP. #AnorakFact: he took the pole, led from lights to flag, & drove fastest lap - a grand chelem - becoming the first driver since Jim Clark in ’63 to do it in consecutive #F1 GPs (Vettel had done it in Singapore 2 weeks before).

#OnThisDay 40 years ago, at Brands Hatch, at the 72nd time of asking, Nigel Mansell finally scored his maiden #F1 GP victory. So, since I was there, I’ve written a #MotorSport column about that memorable race. It’ll be published tomorrow.

#OnThisDay in ’74 Carlos Reutemann won the #USGP, from the pole, in this rakishly handsome Brabham BT44 (pic: Bernard Cahier). But, apart from Reutemann’s triumph, today we should also remember 25-year-old Helmuth Koinigg, who lost his life in a brutal accident in his 2nd #F1 GP.
