And yes, "union flag." Historically it was the "jack" at sea and not on land because it was flown from a ship's jack-staff - but either is correct nowadays, indeed the Government made a statement to that effect back in 1908.

Also - well done the 8 out of 27 (that's almost 30%) hangers of union flags that I saw on my journey who managed to get them the correct way around. (A statistic much improved by whoever was responsible for those adorning Chesterfield's lamp-posts getting them 100% right.)
