Haha, with the new trains, reliability is expected to improve, but I haven't seen any recent stats. Then again, the slow train via Verviers is pretty scenic 😉

Sleeper to Bayonne may be cheaper. From there, one can take a local train to the border (Hendaye), then Euskotren Topo to San Sebastian and renfe to Madrid.

All depends where you live and where you go of course. Metro doesn't cover all parts of the city. I wonder if one could squeeze in parts of the S-train network as well...
