"A king has no friends. Only followers and foe."
Taking cues from the historical epics of Ridley Scott, The King forgoes historical accuracy in favor of dramatic tension, and while it performs its duties admirably, it's hard to find anything truly novel among the familiar.

"I have no words, my voice is in my sword."
Embracing the surreal dreamscapes of the stage & screen combined and boasting a murderers row of epic talent who inject new gravitas & swagger to this well trodden material.
This isn't your grandpa's Shakespeare.

"Full, full of scorpions, is my mind."
This competently directed, solidly performed take on Macbeth boasts decadently composed shot after shot, leaning into the dream like haze of the titular lead's descent into madness, but it never quite finds new texture to this well worn tale.

For the first week, I will be focusing on films set largely before the time of firearms when the emphasis in battle was hand to hand combat.

My favorite episode of the season, possibly of the series, this one just fires on every cylinder, from the editing to the action to the character drama, it's just a master class in what this show can be.

It's hard to deny that this feels like the roughest episode of the season, it makes a lot of sense when you consider it was their first to produce, but still, a solid outing with some rough edges

While I don't think the show wastes any time gaining steam, episode 3 feels like the first time the pieces are all in place and we just get to live in the world and watch things move naturally.

A solid follow up to the stellar premiere, introducing the other half of this shows phenomenal cast while managing to steadily move the narrative forward, almost feels like two episodes in one.

Such a phenomenal first episode, the way it introduces almost all of the core cast, Establishes the premise AND subverts it masterfully is still so impressive.
