This idea is called Pan-Indianism. Some Native people see it as representing intertribal unity & working toward common goals, while others see it as a blending together of distinct tribal identities into generic sameness. To this day, Natives debate whether Pan-Indianism in cities is “good” or “bad”

Relocation of Native people from reservations to urban areas created a whole new experience for Native people: managing their traditions and cultural identity in an urban setting. And it caused Native people from totally different tribes to come together in new ways.

In November 1969, a group of Native Americans took over and occupied Alcatraz Island in the San Francisco Bay for 19 months. A year after the occupation began, President Nixon announced plans for a sweeping new policy for dealing with Native nation that would return power to tribal authorities.

The Indian Reorganization Act (IRA) was the first attempt at legislation that actually tried to help Native Americans. While it does help tribes, it has a lot of flaws and shortcomings. And this flawed law that was made in 1934 is still the law of the land.
