You realize that there are even people in Africa that trade phone minutes as a mean of currency due to the lack of traditional banking systems?
Or we trade our time in the work setting for either currency or even at one point shells. What drives the value of a system is on what we assign it.

Also, bans that were imposed on things like alcohol during prohibition. Or the war on drugs were super effective at ridding alcohol and drug consumption.

Regardless if regulating bodies aimed to ban it. It cannot be stopped. The whole thesis it was found on was to prevent centralized entities from this type of control of it.
