Honored that my photograph of a female Crowned Woodnymph hummingbird has won the Gold Award in the reFocus Awards 2025 black and white world competition in the wildlife category. Another photograph of a flamingo earned an honorable mention in that same category. refocus-awards.com/contests/win...

Third and last Glossy Ibis post (at least for now) is an in-flight shot from Doñana National Park in Spain. With @carolpopegordon.bsky.social

Glossy Ibis day two. For some reason seeing Glossy Ibis in flight triggers in me a Flying Monkeys vibe. But then again, the whole wicked witch thing in Wizard of Oz used to freak me out as a kid. With @carolpopegordon.bsky.social

At Doñana National Park, the Flamingos and the Spoonbills made it easy to overlook birds that I would have ordinarily been thrilled to see. The Glossy Ibis is one and it's really quite handsome, but then, I am partial to any bird with beautiful brown tones. With @carolpopegordon.bsky.social

This happens a lot. After two days of touring Doñana National Park, I think I actually got my best picture of a Spoonbill in the lagoon right by our hotel. With @carolpopegordon.bsky.social

Growing up in Lincoln, Nebraska, the oldest building was from 1869, so it’s mind boggling to me to visit places like Cadiz and Malaga in Spain and see Roman theaters right in the heart of the cities. Both were buried and only rediscovered in the 20th Century.

These little Black-Winged Stilts are so cute they almost look like they are AI generated, but they are real. On the other hand, I'm not sure the fish was as enamored. With @carolpopegordon.bsky.social

On the way to Granada, I insisted on stopping at the Neolithic Antequera Dolmens Site. @carolpopegordon.bsky.social was a bit underwhelmed, especially since we were behind a big school group and it’s not exactly exciting inside. She was a good sport though and it looks good in the pictures.

This may be one of my favorite pictures from Spain. At first glance it's just a pattern of roof tiles. But look closer. Owls are masters of disguise and not just in trees. Thanks to our guide Fernando Navarrete from Wild Doñana for pointing out this Little Owl. With @carolpopegordon.bsky.social

While visiting Doñana National Park in Spain @carolpopegordon.bsky.social and I based ourselves in El Rocío that is one of the most unusual places we’ve ever been. Not a single paved street in the village. It’s all packed sand. On the weekend horse enthusiasts and families descended on the town.

A white stork flying over Doñana National Park, Spain. I'm not sure if it had already delivered the baby, or was on its way to pick one up. With @carolpopegordon.bsky.social

An artful display at the market in Cadiz, Spain. Cadiz is on the Atlantic coast, so it's not surprising that the market is dominated by seafood stalls, with a fair number of fruits, vegetables and meats thrown in for good measure. With @carolpopegordon.bsky.social

A pair of flamingos in flight over Doñana National Park in Spain, with @carolpopegordon.bsky.social. One of the flamingos has been banded. I'm wondering who gets that assignment.

I think we could all use a little osprey on this Monday.

While in Gulf Shores earlier this month I decided to play with the macro lens. Close ups of shells and other beach flotsam. A little break from birds.

I have to brag a bit. I received word from the National Wildlife Federation (@nationalwildlife.bsky.social) that my photo of a house wren received an honorable mention in their 2024 national contest.

May you be as blissful as this during the holiday season.

Taking a break from Ecuador photos. Planning to head to Gulf Shores, Alabama, after Christmas with @carolpopegordon.bsky.social for New Year's. Hoping that the only thing Snowy that we encounter will be of the Plover variety

One of the Clay Licks we visited at Napo Wildlife Center was along the bank the river. While the parrots were not being cooperative (staying high in the trees), for a midwestern guy whose only experience with parrots and parakeets has been pet shops, it was impressive to see hundreds in the wild.

Yesterday I posted pictures of Oropendolas and their nests. Also greeting @carolpopegordon.bsky.social and I at Napo Wildlife Center were Yellow-Rumped Caciques. Their equally impressive nests were in an adjacent tree. Their black bodies really make the yellow feathers and blue eyes stand out.

One of the first things @carolpopegordon.bsky.social and I saw as we arrived at Napo Wildlife Center were these massive hanging nests woven by a colony of Oropendolas. There was no doubt we weren't in Illinois anymore.
