At about 5am, as if perfectly written into a Steven Spielberg summer blockbuster, the first rainstorm in 4 months opened up and repeatedly began smacking down the flames, unrelenting for the next 6 hours.

The wind gusts that usually precede a rain storm never came. In their place were the most glorious swarths of rain walls we’d ever seen.

Just as quickly as the fire spread from 100 to over 1500 burned acres and counting, we were out of imminent danger.
However, wildfires are done when they are good & ready. And she ain’t done yet…..

Day 3 of the now coined BUTTERNUT FIRE in the Berkshires, MA was nearly the day we lost it all. The resort was surrounded by smoke & the fire was just beneath the ridge. Winds were predicted to hit 40mph in our direction.

Fire crews & our incredibly dedicated resort staff spent the day, quite literally, within 100’ of the fire digging fire breaks and clearing dead trees & brush.

Day 2 of the Great Barrington Wildfire was a rollercoaster. In less than 24 hours it went from 100 acres to 1100 and is headed along the ridge line to towns miles away leaving charred forest in its wake. Smoke is thick everywhere and ash is falling from the sky.

We spent the day digging fire breaks & cutting down dead trees literally up & down the mountain to keep the fire at bay while we wait for the rain & air support. Big winds starting at midnight with rain at 5am. Embers are lined up at the ridge. Could go either way.

While this fire will not be fully extinguished until late winter, with the root systems literally smoldering underground, we WILL still open for the ski season on time….as long as the all powerful Mother Nature brings us snow.
