In the mountains, when sunrise arrives is a matter of altitude. From beneath the shadow of mountains to the east, I observed its arrival upon the face of the foothills and mountains before me. I stood in a pre-dawn shadow at the edge of a wide, earthen bowl whose margins had been formed first by geological events now millennia in the past and then later but the intervention of man intent on stopping up and gathering the river winding its way through the mountains.
