It depends on the society? Males may have been seen as giving "more" to the gods. But also, human reproduction means that women may die in childbirth, and also fewer men are needed to continue impregnation, so they may have been more easily spared. Plus, sacrificing criminals and captives of war.

Sadly, but unsurprisingly given this country's historical & contemporary issues of racism, sexism, & wealth disparities, this is the reality of many Black women in the US. Maternal mortality rates are about 4 times higher for Black women compared to White women.
