Enacting student feedback supports student agency and helps them to feel included and respected in the learning process. How do you separate valid criticisms from noise? This post offers three criteria for determining whether to implement student feedback. || #EduSky #AcademicSky #HigherEd

A4: Time, mental space and workload. Redundancies happen and workloads double. New problems come along and we upskill and change whole curricula for (Hi genAI 👋). We are not given time but we are expected to poke it all into the non-existent windows of time between teaching and research. #LTHEchat

Agreed! The oxygen mask analogy is important: we can’t facilitate the students mental health is our own mental health is in disrepair.

We find it’s an issue with our international students that come from cultures where seeking help is stigmatised, so sharing stories of other students and staff (with permission) that have sought learning support, counselling, etc, helps to normalise it.

I think the problem is that anything that becomes mandatory risks becoming a tick box for those who are not interested. I’ve found good uptake when senior leaders prioritise mental health and the ‘moveable middle’ is encouraged to share their experiences.

A3: Normalising help seeking behaviours, timing assessments across the whole course to avoid due dates clashing, low stakes early assessments and check-ins, and getting students to create a self care plan. #LTHEchat

A2: Much like life itself, I think they don’t expect to be supported and see it as a personal issue to manage, even if poor mental health results from an overstuffed assessment regime. #LTHEchat

A1: Ensuring educators are trained in mental health first aid to know signs of poor mental health and the stresses that affect their students. #LTHEchat

Using the Six Thinking Hats is my favourite way of helping student to see a situation from different perspectives. theeddesigner.com/2024/09/05/d... #EduSky #AcademicSky #EdChat
Unlocking professional skills with the Six Thinking Hats method. This technique encourages students to approach problems from multiple perspectives, leads to more comprehensive and creative solutions, and stimulates thought from diverse perspectives.

Can't express how happy I am to see this work happening. We have issues.

All information has bias, and AI amalgamates the dominant bias. Everyone needs critical data literacy, now more than ever.

Super important disclaimer: AI always needs human oversight. If you're creating any kind of branching scenario about people, know the bias inherent within AI and take steps to manage it by being selective about what you use. theeddesigner.com/2024/05/23/u... || #Edusky #EdTech #AIinEDU

Students are more likely to be engaged and motivated when they see the relevance of their work to their own lives and communities.

Generative AI can be useful for feedback however the feedback constantly directs us to emulate what already exists, in the same way AI has been developed. wp.me/peKPOF-eo || #EdTech #EduSky #AcademicSky #AIinEdu
Unless you prompt for feedback that guides your writing in a unique, innovative and nuanced way, the feedback will often direct you to use the same tepid language that AI uses and the same bog-standard structure.

Learning outcomes can seem like bureaucratic hoops to jump through, but think of them like your teaching GPS: when they’re well-designed, they keep everyone heading in the right direction and help you know when you’ve actually reached your destination. wp.me/peKPOF-eh || #EduSky #TeacherTips

Yeah, that’s a rough one… the opposite can happen, too, everyone agrees to give each other high marks. I usually recommend ungraded/formative components that focus on feedback.

This level of group work support will initially increase teacher workload but it will go a long way in preventing major headaches for everyone. Students will be able to collaborate more effectively and develop real-world team skills. wp.me/peKPOF-dU || #EduSky #AcademicSky #TeacherTips #UDL
