as an experiment I've turned off settings > content & media > following feed preferences > show reposts

not sure it will be a permanent change, only did it this morning so I'm still feeling it out, but there's just so much less to scroll

I don't have a bow to put on this. The role or not of "AI" in art is a conversation dominated and driven by conflicting values, that's my point. And fuck Damien Hirst. 11/11

Now, obviously there are complicating factors, frex market forces put pressure on working artists and when your rent depends on production speed you can't afford to indulge in glorious process, no matter your personal values about it. Such is life under capitalism and/or technofeudalism. 10/11

We joke about how the only thing worse than making art is not making art, and sometimes it'll sound like we hate everything about it, and sometimes we kinda do, but in the final analysis we value the doing, not just the product of having done. 9/11

[Most] "AI" enthusiasts don't value the action at all, only the product, and don't comprehend the action having value. Then they think artists are gatekeeping by insisting that the process is important, and tbf we don't always do a good job of explaining what we mean by that. 8/11
December 8, 2025 at 1:10 PM
Some artists value the action exclusively, to the point of not caring about the product at all once it's finished. Most value both in varying proportions. Damien Hirst values neither, and only values being famous & having squillions of pounds (never pass up a jab at that overrated tool). 7/11

I've heard it said that "product is the excrement of action," which kind of gets to the meat of this values disconnect. [Most] artists and [most] "AI" enthusiasts hold radically different, arguably irreconcilable values about product and action. 6/11

Somewhat tangentially, that's probably why everything SilVal touches is such absolute watery shit these days, by sheer force of money they've reduced friction in their own lives so much, and they care about other people's lives so little, that they can't create or innovate anymore. 5/11
December 8, 2025 at 1:10 PM
Secondly, I will never want "seamless" art creation, because innovation occurs at friction points. Budget/time/logistical/supply/skill/etc. constraints demand creative response and can (admittedly not always) yield the most beautiful and inventive outcomes. 4/11

The satisfaction of making a thing, even if it's janky, comes from actually making the thing. It's especially potent when you overcome some kind of limitation or barrier in order to make the thing. That shit is catnip to a certain kind of person. 3/11

First of all I didn't make the space cat because I wanted a triumphant artwork to exist. I made it because it was silly and the thought made me smile, and I wanted to make it and share it and make other people smile too. And I did and I'm satisfied. 2/11

I just wish we could collectively let go of this romantic notion that these people are simply high-spirited innocents who don't realise the internet is real and their actions have consequences. No. They are malicious, the harm is deliberate.

My good boffin. Bro. My guy. They know, that's literally why they do it.
