It’s been a while since I last posted as I have been having problems with my eyes. But I managed to paint this little fella - slowly and over many days - in Procreate. I hope you like him.

Today I give you… The Lesser Snostrich

Lesser Snostrich (Gastropoda Struthio) Head and body 5 feet; shell 4 feet. Feathered foot, long neck, conch and calcium carbonate shell. Whirl size increases as Snostrich ages. Sounds: a variety of chirps, hisses, growls and honks. Behavior: although mostly solitary animals, snostriches will gather in large groups for high tea at around 4pm daily. If entertaining a group of snostrich in your own home be sure to have plenty of Earl Gray Tea on hand, and a good supply of mini cucumber sandwiches. Crumpets are also a good option.

Floppy- Eared Bunguin (Sylvilagus Spheniscidae) Head and body 14” (31-40cm); tail 2 1/4 in. (4-8cm); ears 7” (17-18cm). Back black; belly and face white. Orange beak and feet. Distinct fold in ears. Flightless but enjoy air travel; usually booking first class tickets for the extra leg room. Sounds: a variety of squawks, brays and honks (think elementary school band practice). Behavior: social creatures; usually found in groups chatting and gossiping. (If you need to know anything ask a Bunguin). Particularly fond of gathering with friends for a hot sauna followed by a dip in icy water and then a hot toddy by the fire.

Southern Squirala Bears are generally larger than their Northern counterparts. Known for their teddy bear like appearance, soft gray fur, bushy tails and large black noses. Behavior: Females are less active than males and can often be found lazing about the pool, reading Reader’s Digest and sipping on pina coladas. On Friday’s keep an eye out for them down the salon where they are most likely enjoying a blow-dry and gossip with the girls. Males are active swimmers and will try and out-perform each other in an attempt to impress the females. On Friday’s keep an eye out for them down the local pub where they are most likely having a beer and watching the game.

In the Finger Lakes region of New York State the term Lucky Stone is given to the small dark stones we sometimes find at the water’s edge that have fossil worm holes right the way through them. Legend has it that they bring good luck to those who possess them. I hand-pick these myself and turn them into miniature works of art just for you. They make great little gifts and can be attached to jacket zippers, backpacks, bags, key rings etc for a unique, decorative - and, of course, lucky - touch. This particular one is paired with a silver rooster charm and features a chain of red and green beads. There is a heart shaped lobster clasp at the other end to enable it to be attached to the object of your choice.

Southern Bunny Bee (Apis Sylvilagus) Head and Body 0.79 in. (20mm); ears 0.39 in. (10mm). Robust little creatures with hair all over their bodies. Colors include yellow, black and orange/rust. Habits: Ground nesters. Often use the abandoned burrows of the Eastern Rhimouseros. Meticulous housekeepers. Do not be surprised if you are asked to remove your shoes when visiting. This particular species is unusual in that instead of carrying pollen in pollen baskets located on the legs, they collect pollen on their large fluffy ears. Individuals will perform elaborate dances to inform other Bunny Bees of the presence of pollen; a particular favorite being The Floss. May be found sipping honey mimosas on hot summer evenings.

Eastern Rhimouseros (Peromyscus Rhinocerotidae) Head and body 31/2 in. (80-109mm); tail 3 in. (76mm); horns 2 in. (50mm) and 1/2 in. (13mm) respectively. Highly variable in color. Back dark brown, gray-brown or orange-brown; belly white. Horns: pale brown to white. Sounds: Generally quiet but can sometimes be heard tittering at New Yorker Cartoons on quiet moonlit nights. Habits: nocturnal. Seldom seen. Enthusiastic digger; makes deep burrows that have an undulating path. Also active on or under snow. May travel on the surface. Very territorial and will defend its burrows from intruders with vigor. Eats a variety of foods but is particularly fond of a good Ploughman’s Lunch down the pub.

Northern Batoon (Raccoonicus Bataris) Head and body 10 in.; forearm 5 in. The familiar “masked bandit” but with wings. Fur long, grizzled grayish. Sounds: Generally quiet but can sometimes be heard playing the bassoon on sultry evenings. Habits: nocturnal. Seldom seen, but not very shy when encountered. Often found hanging upside down from trash can lids in dark alleys. Varied diet includes anything it can get its hands on but has a particular propensity for Quality Street chocolates.
