Utterly superb game. I seem to remember it being a bit glitchy when there was a lot going on, but otherwise brilliant.
Bought it as the RAD re-release. It was a bit confusing as it had only come out as full price a matter of months earlier, but I wasn't for looking a gift horse in the mouth!

I think I had this one on the 'Ten Great Games' compilation.
It was great fun, and I seem to remember it being billed as 'Way of the Tiger 2'?
Tenuous link at best - it was a far better game.

Bit of a slow burner this one, as it took a bit of time to get into.
Initially looked impressive, but I didn't really have a clue what you were meant to do.
Persistence paid off, though.
Very creepy, claustrophobic atmosphere - and much better than the US version that came out around the same time.

Think their reasoning was magazine had been a success because it offered a lot of games for £1.25 or whatever, albeit amateur type-ins.
When Mastertronic started doing the likes of Finders Keepers for only a little bit more, people were choosing to spend their money on that over the magazine.

Can vaguely remember this getting previewed in (I think) 'Sinclair Programs' in '85.
We had a speccy at time, and mum was still trying to encourage us to see it as more than a games machine, hence the mag.
Mag accepted defeat and called it a day that Sept, citing budget games as a factor.

Still the greatest game ever made.
And I don't just mean for the C64, either.

Tales of the underworld by a mile. To be rooting for Ventress took a bit of getting used to, but it was a superb series.
Mmm... what's that?...it was produced by Disney? Er...I mean...well .. obviously, what I mean is...it was ok, I mean...let's not get carried away etc.

Utterly superb game, and by far and away the best football game on the C64. Much like Wizball, it was fantastic with one player, but two player team mode was just genius.

There were some *ok* footy games later on in the life of the C64, but 'ok' was about the best you could say about them. Gary Lineker:s Superstar Soccer was decent, Liverpool FC was ok, and Kick Off 2 was alright, but yeah, the C64 was hard done by.

Enjoyed this one. The bonus 6-a-side game on the b-side was good fun as well, as were the action replays.
Winning the world cup as Scotland was a challenge, but I managed it - which possibly lead to unrealistic expectations from myself about 18 months later for Brian McClair and co at Italia '90!

First played this on the speccy, but the C64 version was better, despite appearing to take 20 years to load.

Loved this. Undeniably slow and glitchy, but made for a more strategic game.
Few gaming moments as satisfying as whipping a cross into the box and planting a firm header. That legendary 'diamond deflection system' seemed to sense when it was precisely on your forehead and gave it an extra boost!

I first remember playing the Speccy version of this. It was top notch as well. The satisfaction of hitting an ace on the fastest mode was unbelievable!

Loved this one. It had a bit of an unusual control system, in that you controlled the shot selection, and the computer controlled the movement of your player. It worked surprisingly well.

I had this for my ST, despite not getting the computer until 1990!
Perhaps says more about the turnover of stock at the local computer shop in my hometown.

Tremendous game. One of the earliest third person racers on the C64, but would argue that by time 64 reached end of commercial life, was still the best.
Just felt quality.
Powerdrift etc. were faster, but felt rough'n'ready in comparison, Two player/split screen put it in another orbit entirely.

This was a great game, very easy to pick up and play, with superb graphics
However,of all the football games on C64, Emlyn Hughes was by far and away best. Didn't look much (indeed, most folk these days seem to mistake it for International Soccer) but it played like a dream This was a close second.

Yeah, they were really good.
Nexus was a bit of a let down. As you say, it looks like it should have been something incredible, but I just found it confusing and was never sure what I was meant to be doing! It seemed like a cross between Impossible Mission and Saboteur, but wasn't as good as either.

Had this on 'Pack Of Aces' compilation, alongside IK, Boulderdash 2, and Nexus.
(Parents had a Makro card, and I used to buy all my games there. This was £1.99+vat!).
Somehow never heard of WDW2 beforehand, so loading up a Commando beater was a surprise, albeit a very welcome one.

Had it on 'History In The Making' compilation. Utterly superb - basically Pitstop 2 with bikes.
For about a 4 year period, late '83 to late '87, Epyx made incredible C64 games. I did read their main guys joined EA (which may explain why Skate Or Die feels very Epyx-ey), hence tail off from then on.

Another Firebird re-release that was incredible value... assuming we don't count the cost number of the replacement joysticks!
Normally didn't like Joystick wagglers (I preferred the Epyx approach, where they used timing and skill), but adored this one.

Really enjoyed this one. Also enjoyed Backlash, it's unofficial sequel, when I bought my Atari ST.

Technically very impressive for a 1984 game.

I bought it as the Americana 'Going For Gold' re-release. It was an utterly superb game.
Graphics were brilliant. Archery was a particular favourite.
April 23, 2025 at 5:37 PM
Had this on one of the Gremlin '10 Great Games' compilations.
It was very enjoyable. The only real issue I had with it was the lack of a second player option.
April 19, 2025 at 1:26 PM
Never played it...or rather, never got chance to play it.
Remember great review in ZZAP, and covertape that supposedly had a demo level, only for it to be pulled too late for the print run, and we ended up with(I think) ancient US Gold release 'Time Tunnel', with no explanation on what happened!
