When I read this, I was thinking of teachers and how difficult it can be in our professional lives to put our foot down and say no, even when the request is unreasonable. Anyways, saying no is a skill that has to be learned.

The main thrust of the UCP's policy on education has been an attempt to regulate and control teachers' activities in the classroom, as if they are not trusted and competent professionals, with their own organization capable of addressing issues as required.

The institutions which are supposed to protect rights and serve the interests of the people are failing to do so. But it is the people who are decisive.

Teachers will not stop their fight, because they cannot stop.
Alberta teachers have returned to work, ending their historic 23-day province-wide strike, after the passage of Bill 2, the Back to School Act in the Alberta Legislature. The legislation imposes a Memorandum of Agreement previously rejected by 90 per cent of Alberta teachers, making use of the Charter's notwithstanding clause. On the direction of their union, teachers are complying with the legislation, ceasing strike action and resuming regular duties. They do so with much to be proud of. Their bold and courageous action has smashed the silence on the conditions in schools, and made education an issue at the top of mind for every Albertan. The government has been put on the defensive with respect to education and is now feigning concern for the well-being of students and the issues of class size and complexity. Everyone, including the Premier, admits that large class sizes are a problem. The only one still in denial is the bumbling Minister of Education, who maintains "the research" shows class size doesn't matter beyond Grade 3, even as his government establishes a Class Size and Complexity Task Force. This broad acknowledgment could not have been achieved without Alberta's 50,000 teachers standing up together and taking concrete action. While every society establishes education to serve whatever interests the state espouses, the teachers' strike in Alberta represents a turning point in teachers' demands for a public education system that serves to create a society where the needs of the people dominate. On the eve of the strike, the government claimed it was unclear what teachers really wanted, suggesting the Alberta Teachers' Association (ATA) was out of touch with its membership. At the rallies in Edmonton and Calgary one day before the walkout, teachers spoke for themselves and defined the issues in the strike through their signs and banners. Teachers' direct experience gained through the strike tells them to rely on themselves and the strength of their own initiatives. Teachers are discussing the implications of Bill 2. The ATA has directed members to resume regular duties, including extra-curricular activities they have previously committed to. They warn that the Labour Relations Board may arbitrarily interpret a work-to-rule campaign to be a form of strike action, constituting a violation of the bill and subject to fines. However, teachers will be carefully assessing their ability to take on any new initiatives beyond what they have already formally committed to do. While the government wishes for teachers to be isolated and pitted against each other, teachers can and will discuss in their schools how to push back against a government and school authorities which keep adding more expectations to teachers' plates. On the political front, momentum grows for petition campaigns: one which will demand a referendum on whether private schools should receive public funds, and another by the constituents in the Minister of Education's riding aiming to trigger his recall. Teachers will not stop their fight, because they cannot stop. Their opposition, supported by parents, students and the people of Alberta at large, is vital to resist the anti-social offensive of the United Conservative Party government and to fight for a future where the right to education is provided with a guarantee and the people define the character and quality of education.
