In Motion: Recently unearthed by Bill Draheim, here are the videos he shot of @kristinhersh.bsky.social playing live at the First Avenue in Minneapolis, MN, on June 19th 2001. This was a date of the "Sunny Border Blue" tour and Kristin was very much on fire on the stage at that time.

It's the 40th anniversary of the release of @throwingmuses.bsky.social's "Doghouse Cassette", the blueprint for their debut album that was recorded with the help of Gary Smith and Geoff Patterson. #TMDoghouse40 Every cassette inlay was colored by hand.

"We let 4AD alter our image a bit in accordance to the songs on the album (...) [what] we had in mind was to have been different. We had a bunch of demo songs, and we had this real country-punk vibe to us, more sing-songy, a lot like the Violent Femmes, except sung by real, never-violent femmes...

Ivo Watts-Russell, then head of 4AD, was captivated by the tape and, though reluctant to sign an American band to his British label at first, he offered them a 1 album deal that they accepted. @kristinhersh.bsky.social always said that 4AD kinda curated the sort of record they wanted. #TMDoghouse40

October 1st, 40 years ago: The Boston Phoenix announces the release party for @throwingmuses.bsky.social's "Doghouse Cassette" that same night at The Rat in Boston. This recording would eventually get them signed to 4AD. #TMDoghouse40

Here's a crazy little thing: Throwing Muses's Anthology, released in 2011, on memory stick. It includes the 43 tracks of the album, and also a live performance from Spain. I love how they consistently do things ahead of the curve and outside the box.
