All these years later, that’s what I remember most about the night. Both because what this kid did was so inappropriate and obnoxious, but mainly because of the way Reiner countered that with empathy and kindness. They say never meet your heroes, but Reiner was the exception to the rule.

Reiner gently told the kid that he didn’t own the rights to The Princess Bride; William Goldman did. Then he spoke about how amazing William Goldman was. It was a little thing, but instead of further humiliating this kid, he took pity on him. No lectures, no sarcasm, just empathy and humility.
