Fantastic write up on Hill House. If you've never read it, take a few hours this month and do yourself the favor. It's the template for modern day haunted house stories, including King's The Shining.

I love this analysis of the omniscient narrator in Shirley Jackson's The Haunting of Hill House.
@thelincoln.bsky.social writes how in some passages, "I can’t help but think it is Hill House itself speaking to the reader, hinting at, yet still keeping hidden, its many mysteries."

I was a big fan of the first one but mostly worried it will be too similar?

Haven't played a video game in a minute. Is Hades 2 worth it? (I only have a Switch fwiw)

Right? Their whole pitch is killing our industries but we're supposed to listen to their sad violins about it?

*shrug* AI weirdos have been very clear they plan to kill every other industry by replacing workers with substandard AI. Turnabout's fair play.

Collins entire career has been defined by naively falling for obvious lies from conservatives "committing" to things they never follow through on.

Perhaps the most gullible politician alive, if you believe her own words.

So, yes, this seems like it would be her only idea.

One of Sen. Collins idea to break logjam: Dems give votes to reopen government with a “commitment” to negotiate on ACA premium tax credits. She says it’s not entirely clear what Democrats think of this

"I don't know the details, I just saw a headline"

We are ruled by the most pathetic ruling class in history

Johnson: "It's true that in previous shutdowns, many or most furloughed employees have been paid for the time they were furloughed, but there is new legal analysis - I don't know the details, I just saw a headline - but there are some legal analysts saying that might not be appropriate or necessary"

Reading some Kafka a day before my birthday
October 7.

“Unsolvable question: Am I broken? Am I in decline? Almost all signs speak in favour of this; coldness, dullness, the state of my nerves, absentmindedness, ineptitude in the office, headaches, sleeplessness. Almost nothing but hope speaks against it.”

There's no conflict between Trump being the culmination of the GOP over last 50 years and an acceleration of worst trends. Trump right now wouldn't be this powerful if it wasn't for the GOP SCOTUS--packed over previous admins--or a fully enabling GOP congress that has been extremist for decades.
thelincoln.bsky.social
Main point to understand is current crisis is in a literal sense enabled by the past of the GOP. E.g., Would Trump have these dictatorial powers if the SCOTUS hadn't been stacked with far-right GOP justices over the decades? Or if so GOP in congress, many elected for a long time, didn't support it?

"We can't prosecute Bush admin criminals. They were aberrations. If we forgive them, the party will moderate!"

This is like Huff Post headline politics. "Joe Walsh EPICALLY SLAMS Trump in X post." Yeah well he hasn't achieved jack shit.

The Dem establishment spent the last decade saying Trump was an aberration and trying to appeal to Republican voters. It failed entirely. If Dems are switching rhetorical tactics, which I haven't really seen, well, it is because the other failed.
