Great article from Ryan Burge today. I'm certainly among the 66% entering ministry from a different career. I'm also comfortable with what's most likely in my future — bivocational ministry — something many others are doing, too. What's normative isn't always what's most visible!

From the article: "I told some friends where I was going, and half the people I told had no clue where on earth Armenia even was." Ask that same group of conservative Christians and you just *know* they have very specific opinions on trans people and drag queens, though.

When you hear the word “Baptist,” don’t think Southern Baptist Convention. Instead, think American Baptist Churches USA or Alliance of Baptists, which filed suit this week against immigration raids at houses of worship, similar to another case by the Cooperative Baptist Fellowship earlier this year.

So, um, is there actually a way to link out on a TikTok? Doesn’t even seem I can include a link other than IG or YT on my profile.

Anyways, my third experiment with a reel: Yes, liberal and progressive Christians do exist!

I’m kinda digging this!

TikTok/Reel no. 2: The Many Other Kinds of Baptists. (I’m themattcomer on TikTok; follow me! And give Dr. Stell a follow there too drwilliamstell)

Unless I’ve done something wrong, I am not a fan of being unable to access more advanced editing features when using the built-in stitch function.

Trying something new! My first reel on TikTok! Follow me there: themattcomer. I’m mostly experimenting with this for work, but I’m looking forward to being able to share my thoughts in a different way and learn along with everyone!

The Catholics and Anglicans/Episcopalians (à la magisterial Protestantism) are having a great Fourth of July dreaming up ways to undo the First Amendment. Important reminder: Christian nationalism is not within the exclusive purview of evangelicals and fundamentalists.

Finally found a simple floating frame I liked. Two years since I’d gotten these Bible leaves. From a 1615 King James printed in London. The passages are Acts 6-8:39 — Choosing of the first deacons, Stephen’s speech and execution, Philip and the Ethiopian eunuch, and more.

Great to hear from @stevenrharmon.bsky.social on his experience in Rome, “Baptist Reflections on a Catholic Conclave,” during Sunday school hour at church this morning. St. John’s Baptist is lucky to have you, Steve!

Finally got around to ordering @brandanrobertson.bsky.social new book. Looking forward to this fresh take that, from first appearances, moves us from a merely defensive stance to full reclamation, embrace, and celebration.

Regarding the Southern Baptists’ continued anti-LGBTQ hate this week: They may be large, but they represent only themselves. I and so many others are #NotThatKindofBaptist. Statement from the Association of Welcoming and Affirming Baptists (with which my church is affiliated)…

The modern Trumpist GOP has coarsened an already vile political discourse in this country, and, call me a prude or pollyannish if you want, I just don’t think Democrats should play into that same crude game.

Emblazoned with Constantine’s Chi-Rho, I’ve affectionately dubbed this shirt “The Jesus Jersey.” And today is as fitting a day as ever to wear it!

May 20, 1775 — Residents in Charlotte Towne, North Carolina (or so eyewitness accounts and circumstantial evidence say), became the first to declare independence from Great Britain, producing the Mecklenburg Declaration of Independence — hence the May 20th 1775 on North Carolina's flag.

A double anniversary commemorations today for Church and U.S. history geeks...

May 20, 325 — Opening of the first worldwide (or ecumenical) Church council in Nicaea (in present-day Turkey), which produced the first version of the Church's first definitive confession of faith, the Nicene Creed.

We pray for the continued efforts toward unity in the Church universal: The first person Pope Leo XIV greeted following his inaugural mass this morning was the Ecumenical Patriarch of Constantinople, followed by the Orthodox Patriarch of Jerusalem.

Stayed out long enough to let the fire die down and see the Big Dipper. Life is really hard right now, but these every-other-weekends up near Boone are bringing us some excitement and new life amidst the old and uncertain.

Finally got around to cleaning up my humble little flower garden from its early spring mess. It may not seem like much, but it’s much more orderly now! Amazed at how big that one mum got already; definitely needed pruning.

Live from (near) Boone, a happy Sunday sunset from me to you.

You may see this in all the Francis convo. This comes from an otherwise good short book on Methodism. But this chart is wrong. Baptists, though informed by Anabaptists, actually branched from the Church of England and congregationalism. Anabaptists branched more from Zwingli, Calvinism, Lutheranism.

Just finished a first draft of a very short paper on Orthodox iconography, and I was struck by how appropriate this comment from St. John of Damascus is for this Holy Week and impending Good Friday.

The T-shirt, this line of lyrics… are the most unintentionally gay thing I’ve seen in Country music in a long time.

Days after reading a bit from Albert J. Raboteau for class, my mind keeps coming back to this quote.
