No matter how far in the future a video game takes place, I have an immediate aversion to any sort of laser/plasma weapon. In this house we know kinetic weapons are just better. You keep your refracted light/superheated plasma I am hitting you with the chunk of metal from my explosion tube.

Sometimes you just have to draw things in a way to make them look cool and not necessarily correctly
If the light source left the room, or the thing is not very anatomically correct, etc, then sometimes it really doesn't matter as long as it looks great
