BREAKING NEWS: The campaign to save Bastion House and the former Museum of London (Powell & Moya, 1976-77) has won the right to present its case to the High Court. The Judicial Review will challenge the City of London's decision to demolish the buildings.

The joy of reading through the excellent "Red Square" book from @themodernist.bsky.social about BEA's corporate identity & Mary de Saulles has got me looking through my BEA collection; this c.1965 folder for London Heathrow shows the symbol/logo & some fine graphic design.

BEA : Your guide to London Heathrow Airport : BEA Executive Club edition : folder : British European Airways : Sales Department : London : nd [c.1965]. A rather fine small format card folder issued by the BEA Sales Development department for members of the BEA "Executive Club"; I suspect this is why this is pocket sized and on stiff card to both give a feel of quality and durability.

It shows the stamp of BEA's 1960's corporate identity developed by designer Mary de Saulles whose 'red square' identity came into use c.1958 - 1960 and included all elements of the company's fleet and publicity. Undated this shows, rather well, the tail of a BEA Hawker Siddeley Trident and this aircraft, an early tri-jet, came into service with BEA in 1964. The upper two thirds of the cover are dominated by the graphic of a tail fin showing the BEA and Trident symbols and against the blue sky white 'thrust' lines to give the impression of speed.

Catching up on copies of @themodernist.bsky.social I hadn't got round to reading and struck once again by the power of a strong frame, via Jeremy Parrett’s article about the Design Council slide collection. Taster here:

A photo slide with The Design Council stamped in red on the frame with a four digit code number. The image is of a plastic traffic bollard in a blank grey space. Another slide labelled Toy Dolls, Peggy Nisbet Limited. The dolls are very 1970s folky little things. Miffy from Holland, I think.
