I am really excited to see what you make next, and I want to apologise for my continued shipping of Gwen and Lamia (despite her abhorrent flaws).

Post script:
If somehow the dev sees this!

One: I'm sorry for ranting about things you have read many times by now. Who wants to listen to a nobody explain stuff you already made?

Two: My reason for @'ing is selfish. My misery would be doubled should you make another story that undermines itself.

Conclusion:
I will forever be wanting this story retold in a medium that gives it the proper shine that is so clearly within it. I will forever be heartbroken by the knowledge that this may never happen.

Please somebody give it an adaptation... Were I a millionaire, I would make that offer.

The messaging drives home not only our impact on the environment but also our impact on each other through support of political decisions.

Despite the one character that speaks in 'leet', I thought that the writing of politics was mostly good. Don't let other reviewers say otherwise.

As for the themes of the story: Finally, a game I have played that talks about the Anthropocene! The moral lessons might be more than a little on the nose, with some of the least subtle implementation I have seen, but they're still good messages! Don't be discriminatory, care about animals.

To further evidence this: The most tense fight is one that puts you on a time limit. The added difficulty of a new fail condition immediately drives up a sense of urgency that you feel in tandem with the characters literally fighting against the clock.

Need I say more?

When this undercuts some of the most stomach dropping presentations of threats I have seen in media, it feels like my soul has been frozen and then deep fried. The game walks you to the gates heaven (or hell) and tells you that it forgot the keys.

The medium of the story telling affects the story profoundly, becuase the sense of struggle translates from player to narrative.

If the player does not struggle, then this conveys to them that the characters did not either (in spite of the characters sometimes saying otherwise.)

The game's easiness makes many of the fights (save Lamia and two others) sorrowfully anti-climactic. You do not feel as if you are ever in danger, and as such you can hardly feel worried for any of the characters!

Imagine if every fight in famous manga 'Berserk' ended in two - four combat panels.

It's hard to feel the dread in the flighted fight, shiver at death in consequence of a hero's making, or feel a rush at an old veteran leaping into a ring to save his friend, when these subsequent truly epic battles begin and end without any experienced hardship!
November 20, 2025 at 2:33 AM
The story begins small and scales itself appropriately to the character's growth in strength.

Near all the characters undergo hardships, transformative revelations, and deepenings of their relationships, that end in triumph or tragedy.

The plot is robust, engaging, and inspiring. Only...

The structure of such a story is like an epic, with great hurdles the characters must overcome, twists and turns, and formidable legends and deep lore that all play their own dread filling part to flesh out the journey. All parts of the game add to a satisfying sense of progression and hardship.

To paint the picture:
The game is about a rat undertaking the impossible goal of killing one specific human. The world building sees humans as gods, and creates a fabulous parallel between normal fantasy and 'the modern day' as seen from a small non-human animal's perspective. It's genius!

Unfortunately, this spoon is rusted, and so detracts from what's otherwise a fun story, with a killer soundtrack, fab visuals, good jokes, unique characters, and more memorable moments than I can count on both hands.

Monthly I mourn for this, in a pathetic 'man shouting at storms' sort of way.

Story:

"Why is it fine Oscar? Normally you say gameplay that's less engaging is a bad thing."

Yes, but in this case the developer has explained exactly why things are as they are: Becuase they wanted the focus to be on story.

In this way the gameplay is more like a spoon for food.
November 20, 2025 at 2:33 AM
This lack of necessity to adapt and learn leads the gameplay to be even easier than it already was. Once you assess that the new enemy requires no change in the optimal tactic, you can go on auto-pilot and play.

This would be fine, if I didn't also think it detracts from the gravity of the story.
November 20, 2025 at 2:33 AM
Unfortunately, it can't save the game from being dreadfully agonisingly easy. Within the first or second combat with any given match up of characters, you will fast discover the best strategy for one fight also works on all other fights.

There exist very few challenges that require any change.
November 20, 2025 at 2:33 AM
The game even attempts to spice combat up by changing what teams of people and characters you are controlling in differing situations! This change requires you to switch strategy, no longer having the skills and tools that you once relied on. It's good for story and gameplay, and I enjoyed it a lot.
November 20, 2025 at 2:33 AM
Now, to continue with praise where praise is due, the combat and item systems are well thought out. Items one uses are not gone forever, once consumed in battle, and the weapons and clothing you pick can change how you play.

Combat involves strategy, and that is engaging.
November 20, 2025 at 2:33 AM
I bring this up becuase it is indicative of the entire rest of the gaming experience. Most everything is serviceable and functional, yet you can allways see the shadow of what it could have been.

And the answer to why 'it's not' seems to often come back to difficulty.
November 20, 2025 at 2:33 AM
This is a very minor nit pick, but it would have been more engaging were progress threatened in this way. Even the very first area has you walking across pipes, which felt like it was MEANT to be a balance tutorial until I found there was no danger to be feared. It feels like a feature was removed.
November 20, 2025 at 2:33 AM
The game is an RPG with turn based combat, so movement is only really consigned to walking between areas and occasionally avoiding the sight of enemies.

This is where my first criticism arrives, as the movement involves a lot of walking across narrow and precarious surfaces with no ability to fall.
November 20, 2025 at 2:33 AM
Gameplay:
Gloves off, this section aims at an easy takedown equivalent to the game's hardest challenge. That is to say: I may take a long while, but the criticisms and explorations have hardly been easier to undertake.

Let's start with the basics: You can move in all cardinal directions.
