If the reason you're learning a language or living as an expat is small, then you'll quit when things get hard. And maybe you should, since it doesn't matter.

But if what you're doing matters, then persevere. Nothing worthwhile in life is easy. The things that matter are always hard. Don't give up.

It's such a basic cross-cultural that everyone "knows" to avoid, yet it is SO hard to actually do in practice.

Don't make assumptions. Don't assume what will be similar, why something happens, that people share your values, or explain the world the same way.

Cultures aren't monolithic. So just because you asked one person "why" something occurs in your host culture...doesn't mean that you now understand.

Until you've asked lots of people and gotten the same answer, take everything with a grain of salt.

If you're learning a language, you can't know every word. You don't know every word in your native language but are always learning new ones!

If you're a beginner: focus on learning the common words. If more advanced: learn what matters to your needs, goals, & interests
