Searching for other rainbow-hued life forms that inhabit classroom spaces. Advocate for all kids and teachers in public education, but especially those on the margins. Let's find each other and make public education better.
How does one politely say, “No shit”?
President Trump has caused a constitutional crisis as he tests the boundaries of executive power, scholars say. “There have been so many unconstitutional and illegal actions in the first 18 days of the Trump presidency,” one expert said. “We never have seen anything like this.” nyti.ms/4aWSijk

The oligarchy is oligarch-ing.

Let’s talk about what brought Musk so much of his success: the research and development of others. As long as he gets a check, I guess.

What a colossal asshole.
Elon Musk’s cost-cutting effort announced a variety of cuts at the Education Department totaling over $900 million, apparently aimed at hobbling the department’s research arm, the Institute of Education Sciences.

Elon Musk’s cost-cutting team said that it had “terminated” 89 of the department’s contracts, apparently targeting its research arm.

Waiting on the Million Teacher
March to happen. I would gag to be a part of a million pissed off teachers marching on the White House.

Good question. How would you coach someone into this mindset?

Also: it’s okay to not be okay.

Field testing an English proficiency test on the day of a nationwide immigrant student protest is…difficult. 🤷

As it should be.

I am trying to weigh in on everything that has happened since Monday, and my anger has been difficult to contain.

So, I am trying to focus on the things I can control…

But it’s hard to put into perspective when laws no longer serve the kids you work with everyday.

"Under current law, undocumented immigrant children have the right to a public education, and federal immigration agents generally cannot arrest students or family members [in schools]."

There's a special place in hell for anyone who would try.

To quote my colleague, “you have to use English to learn English!”

Strong correlation between speaking scores on #ELPA21 assessment and Ss meeting overall growth markers. 77% alignment seen in Cincinnati Public Schools.

So…what impact can we have with #MLs and ALL students if we get them talking?

Well… this may lead to even more dumb ideas. Watch this space…
Abolishing the Department of Education has to be one of the dumbest ideas of my lifetime.

There’s gotta be a better way. I can think of a few different ways that would benefit the economy, general American mirth, and…hell, even increase test scores, but systemic racism only takes loud voices to maintain its strength. That’s why it’s such a bitch to combat.

I know very little about these international tests. However, given that it’s an uphill battle to get students to care about taking state tests, I have to wonder how seriously many US students are invested in doing their best on these.

Presented this morning on supporting #SLIFE students at secondary schools. Lots of good feedback. Ready to build a community and learn what others are doing to get our MLs literate, thriving, and benefiting our communities.

I now plan on talking about state and federal departments of ed with wrestling references.

Can you smell what ODEW is cookin? Smells like Science of Reading…

I’m really just waiting for Linda McMahon to slam OCR on a false table, or hold college loan forgiveness in a sleeper hold. 🤢

SAY IT LOUDER FOR THE PEOPLE IN THE BACK!

Diversity adds value to the schema bank in a classroom... end of sentence.

When systemic racism is discussed, gatekeeping ELs/MLs from their English-speaking, American-born peers is a prominent form.

Hey Bluesky World!

I'm presenting at #OHTesol tomorrow about how to improve systems for Students with Limited or Interrupted Formal Education #SLIFE. Talking about a survey I wrote to ask students about their take on American public ed and their future plans post-high school. TBC.
