The wicker man (this is the Alton Towers version) is mentioned by both Caesar and Strabo as a method of Celtic human sacrifice. With the ashes scattered to help crops grow. Diodorus also said Celts would burn animals and captives with the first fruits of the harvest or in wooden boxes #FolkyFriday

November means bulb planting! Was out adding crocus and fritillaries to some community spaces over the weekend and I’ve ordered myself more “Midnight Sky” hyacinths for home today too because they’re just stunning 🌱 #GardensHour

No it’s actually just the leaves of the dahlia variety! I grow this one called Dracula which is similar, with black foliage too 😍🖤

Definitely most proud of the recycled/reused plants (also grown from my own seed) and donated pots I’ve slowly added to a local churchyard. As part of a plan to improve a quiet, unloved area there. Put in 5 unwanted yarrows last week from our local In Bloom summer bedding scheme too 🥰👍 #GardensHour

Most goblins were said to be malicious. Causing problems in homes by banging pots and pans, moving furniture or tapping on walls and doors. Hobgoblins are more friendly! They happily help humans in exchange for gifts. These are the guys I like to think I have in my garden! 😂 #FolkloreSunday 🌱

I always see posts like this getting attention but they confuse me because it’s really not that hard to buy any of those flowers or grow them for yourself. I’ve grown them all this year! 😂 🌱 #FlowersOnFriday

Over on the the old bird app people seem to be claiming that girls can’t like Star Wars which is totally ridiculous. I like it so much I even grow the “Star Wars” dahlia! Take that guys 😝😂 🌱 #StarWars

The frogs have got their hats on! Had loads of fun at Scarefest yesterday, hadn’t been to Alton Towers in a while but the 3 mazes they’ve got now are pretty great 🥰🎃

Still recovering from the storm here (hope nobody else has sustained any real damage) but the Dracula dahlias are loving spooky season so far! They’re having another flowering session in honour in the vampire’s favourite month! 😂🩸🦇🧛🏻♂️ #GardensHour

Yes! I’ve had a lot of luck with Continental coming back, for the third time this year. Not lost that many either. Really good compared to some I’ve grown which never do anything the following year! 😭😩

They’re not quite flowers anymore but they used to be! And this is my best year for lanterns so far as I’ve got about the same amount left outside. They’re such a lovely sign of autumn 🍂 🌱 #FlowersOnFriday

Did you know fuchsia berries are edible? Well they are (but a woodlouse got to this one first!). Their fruit might be why they were cultivated by the Incas and in the language of flowers they can represent grace or taste. Probably “you’re tasteful” not “you’re yummy” though 😂 #FolkloreSunday 🌱
